MiSustainable Holland: Area offers recycling options beyond curbside

Thanks to Holland’s recently revamped curbside program, recycling in our community is as easy and efficient as ever. But what about items that don’t fit or belong in your 96-gallon cart?

Finding earth and wallet-friendly homes for old appliances, furniture, home renovation waste and the like can be a daunting challenge at first glance. But with a little effort, residents will find they have a number of accessible and low or no-cost options at their disposal.

Through Holland’s Project Pride Program, city residents can dispose of miscellaneous items weighing less than half a ton at Republic Services Westshore Recycling and Transfer Station located at 4368 60th St.

Residents can request up to two coupons per year online or in-person through the Community and Neighborhood Services Desk at City Hall.

PADNOS' Black River Facility accepts a variety of materials. You can visit them at 11531 Chicago Drive and get paid for scrap metal (such as appliances, bedframes, wire, cable, lawn furniture and car parts). PADNOS also accepts certain electronics, batteries and more.

Furthermore, PADNOS' Black River location will accept materials including vinyl siding, corrugated cardboard and low-value electronics at no cost. Other commodities can be dropped off to be properly disposed of for a small fee. For more information, visit padnos.com.

Bustling with big trucks, heavy machinery, drive-on vehicle scales, sirens and horns, these facilities can be intimidating to approach. Luckily, the folks running the show are incredibly friendly. You can expect great customer service and bright smiles that match their neon safety equipment.

Let them know you're new, and they'll guide you through the process. All of these locations are well signed and designed to keep customers safe. Don’t forget to thank them for their hard work on your way out.

Additional recycling opportunities include Holland BPW’s Appliance Recycling Program. Customers can arrange to have up to two large appliances and two small appliances hauled away each year. All appliances must be in working order and placed outside the home or in an accessible place (like a garage) at the time of your scheduled pick-up.

To get started, call Mike’s Junk Hauling at 616-405-9889 or email recycling@hollandbpw.com.

Our local Ottawa County Environmental Sustainability Center at 14053 Quincy St. will accept some items not appropriate for curbside recycling, including TVs and computer monitors for a small fee, scrap metals and some hazardous waste materials.

What’s more, residents can work together to bring recycling and disposal resources even closer by hosting neighborhood-level events. West Core Neighborhood hosted its third annual Community Clean Up this past Saturday. For those who really don’t want to lift a finger, a variety of small businesses in the area will haul your unwanted items away for a fee.

Spring cleaning may be a distant memory, but it’s never too late to empty out the basement, reclaim your garage space or get rid of that old “yard art” through our community’s network of friendly and approachable recycling resources.
