Mitchell City Council to consider installing LED street lights, pedestrian buttons along Sanborn Boulevard

Mar. 14—The Mitchell City Council will consider approving the installation of LED street lights and pedestrian buttons along a portion of Sanborn Boulevard during Monday's meeting at City Hall.

According to City Engineer Joe Schroeder's memo in the council agenda, the LED street lights and pedestrian buttons would be installed along Sanborn Boulevard at the intersections of First, Fifth, Seventh and 12th avenues. The lights along the Sanborn bridge would also be included in the project.

The request to add LED light fixtures and audible pedestrian buttons at a handful of intersections along Sanborn Boulevard comes after the city recently finished the $9 million Sanborn Boulevard utility improvement project in late October. Schroeder's memo states the LED lights would make all of the street light fixtures along the high-traffic Sanborn corridor "consistent."

The audible pedestrian push buttons that are requested to be installed will mimic the buttons that are currently placed on Burr Street and Havens Avenue. To complete the project, the city received two bids for the installation of the LED lights and pedestrian buttons. In total, the LED lights would be installed at 15 street lights.

For the pedestrian buttons project, TK Electric submitted the low bid, which came in at $69,840. Muth Electric's bid amounted to $98,928, roughly $30,000 more than the low bid. The city is recommending the council to approve TK Electric's low bid.

However, the city is recommending Muth Electric's bid for the installation of the LED light fixtures, which came in at $23,540, roughly $7,000 lower than TK Electric's $30,841 bid.

Following the completion of the three-year long Sanborn Boulevard improvement project, which included upgrades to the sanitary and sewer system, concrete surfacing, curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements, Terry Johnson, the city's engineering supervisor, said the LED lights and pedestrian buttons will drastically improve the lighting for drivers and walkers.
