Mitchell High School softball bows out in two games at Class A state tournament

Oct. 1—SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell High School's softball season came to an end Friday in the Class A state tournament at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, with the Kernels bowing out in two games.

Mitchell, seeded No. 13 in the tournament, fell 14-4 in five innings in the tournament opener against fourth-seeded Brookings, and then was shutout by 12th seeded Sioux Falls Jefferson in an elimination game Friday afternoon by a score of 14-0 in three innings.

In the opener, Brookings scored six runs in the first inning and after Mitchell scored three runs in the third inning to narrow the game, the Bobcats added five more runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 14-3. Keirstyn Krcil had two hits and two runs scored, with Kate Nash adding a double and an RBI. Brooklyn Jarding, Ally Barlean and Macey Linke each singles and RBIs. Krcil was the losing pitcher, with five innings pitched, 11 hits and 14 runs (13 earned) allowed.

Against Jefferson, Mitchell was held without a hit or a walk, as an 11-run first inning for Jefferson put the game out of reach quickly. Three Kernels reached on errors and one reached base on a fielders' choice. Keirstyn Krcil was the losing pitcher of record, throwing 2 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits, 12 runs (nine earned) and walking four. Macey Linke threw in the third inning, recording one out and allowing two earned runs.

Mitchell's season comes to a close with a 1-23-1 record.
