Mitchell Junior Legion splits doubleheader at Harrisburg tournament

Jun. 5—HARRISBURG — Mitchell Junior Legion 16-and-under team split a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 and Brookings Junior Legion Chutes on Saturday at the Harrisburg tournament.

In Game 1, Sioux Falls Post 15 turned an early 5-0 lead after the first inning into a 11-2 win over Mitchell.

Landon Soulek scored one run, had one hit and drove in one run while Kellen Odell scored one run and had two hits. Karter Simpson also had two hits while Hudson Borgan had one RBI. Connor Singrey, Tyler Sanderson and Conor Matke chipped in with one hit a piece.

Sanderson took the loss for Mitchell, with two strikeouts to four walks. He also surrendered four hits and five earned runs. Simpson allowed four hits and one earned run in less than one inning pitched.

In Game 2, Mitchell scored five runs in the first two innings en route to a 8-3 victory over Brookings Junior Legion Chutes.

Mason Herman finished with two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs, while Gavin Soukep went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Karter Simpson had two hits as well, along with four other batters in Mitchell's lineup managing to get one hit.

Parker Mandel picked up the win for Mitchell as he struck out four batters, allowed six hits, three runs and three walks in his 6.1-inning start.

Mitchell Junior Legion will host its annual Coca-Cola Pop Drive on Monday around Mitchell and will take the field again Tuesday, as they host Spearfish at 1 p.m. at Cadwell Park.
