Apr. 29—ABERDEEN — The Mitchell High School girls golf team made an early-season statement on Thursday.

The Kernels edged Class AA powerhouse, Sioux Falls O'Gorman, for the team title at the Hub City Invitational at Moccasin Creek Country Club. Mitchell carded a 39-over-par, while O'Gorman was six shots off the pace.

"The girls knew what was before them and they took it head on and I couldn't be happier for them," Mitchell assistant coach Jeff Meyerink said. "That's a lot of pressure to throw at them and making a statement like that is going to go a long way for the season."

It was Mitchell's third team title this season, but this one is the biggest one yet. The Knights have won eight Class AA state titles since 2010, including three straight from 2017-19.

"O'Gorman has been the team to beat for the last three-four years," Meyerink said. "It seems like they are always right there. ... It's the first time we've seen them and we got them by six shots. I don't think anybody expected us to, but we did it and the girls are super happy."

O'Gorman's Shannon McCormick was the individual medalist with an even par 72, while Aberdeen Central's Danielle Podoll was second (76).

But then Mitchell's balance shined through again. Masy Mock (78) and Allison Meyerink (80) took third and fourth, respectively. Quinn Dannenbring tied for fifth with an 81. Ella Flippin came in tied for 12th place with an 88. Maddie Childs shot a 99 to add to Mitchell's balanced day.

"I can't tell you how big that is, to have somebody come in and finish third in the tournament, fourth and sixth in the tournament," coach Meyerink said. "That just goes to show you the potential of this team."

And their front-nine scores set the tone for the day.

"We got off to a really solid start as a team," coach Meyerink said. "Allison came out and shot even par on the front nine. Masy shot a 39 and Quinn a 40. It just set the bar high and Ella came in with a really solid score, too. I mean just good play by everybody today."

Up next, the Kernels will compete in the Yankton Triangular on May 4 against the Bucks and Sioux Falls Lincoln.
