Mitchell Post 18 bounces back on second day of Rapid City Veterans' Classic

Jun. 3—RAPID CITY — Thursday's action at the Veterans' Classic saw Mitchell Post 18 fall behind early in a pair of contests and ultimately fall short of a comeback in both, but Friday was the opposite.

Post 18 claimed an early edge and never presented an opening for Bellevue (Neb.) in a 3-0 victory at Fitzgerald Stadium to move to 1-2 on the weekend.

Peyton Mandel drove in a run by Jonah Schmidt with a double in the first inning to take the early lead. Then, in the second, Carson Fahey's sacrifice fly scored Ryan McGinnis to double the advantage.

Mitchell added one more run in the fifth inning as a Jace Larson single scored Mandel, though Post 18 wouldn't need the insurance run.

Landon Waddell carried over a strong spring season into his first pitching start of the summer, throwing a complete game shutout with four strikeouts while yielding just two hits and one walk.

Mandel and Schmidt each notched two hits for Post 18, which totaled eight as a team. Both of Mandel's hits were doubles, while Schmidt made his way to second base on both occasions with two stolen bases.

Mason Chandler pitched all six innings for Bellevue with three strikeouts to two walks, as Paul Schuyler and Cooper Brown recorded the only hits of the day.

Post 18 will face Rapid City Post 22 in the final pool play game of the weekend before teams are seeded for their final games on Sunday.
