Mitchell teener baseball roundup: Mitchell teams split on final day of tournament

Jun. 5—MITCHELL — Mitchell White posted nine runs in the third inning and piled on with three more in the fourth inning to pick up a 14-2 win over Sioux Falls Post 15 in the final game of the 13-and-under teener tournament on Saturday at Drake Field.

Penn Long led Mitchell by going 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored. Dawson Smith went 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs, while Kaden Allen (2-for-2) and Braydon Rendil (1-for-1) went perfect at the plate. Rendil and Stratton Zens each scored two runs while Avery Kause and Denen Ellwein had two RBIs a piece.

Smith pitched 3 1/3 innings for Mitchell, striking out four batters while only allowing one earned run. Kause pitched the final 2/3 of the fourth inning and struck out one batter.

MITCHELL — In Game 1 on Saturday, Mitchell White fell to Pierre 9-3. After a competitive third inning in which Pierre scored four runs and Mitchell answered back with three of their own, Pierre scored five runs in the final two innings to seal the win.

Lincoln Bottum and Dawson Smith had one hit and one RBI each, while Avery Kause chipped in with one hit as well. The three Mitchell teeners to score runs were Kause, Bottum and Kaden Allen. Bottum also pitched all six innings, striking out three batters, but surrendered seven hits and seven earned runs.

Mitchell White (4-6) will be back on the field Wednesday, June 8 when they travel to Yankton for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.

MITCHELL — Struggling to find its offensive footing in the 4-1 loss to West Central during the first game of the Mitchell teener baseball tournament, the Mitchell Black 14-and-under team responded in Game 2 with a 11-3 win over Winner at Cadwell Park.

In Game 1, both West Central and Mitchell went scoreless through four innings, before West Central managed to break through with a single by Jack Sebert that brought home a runner for the first score of the game. Mitchell saw themselves playing an uphill battle from that point on and ended up being down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. After a double by Dawson Jonnassen, Everett Morrison had a base hit that managed to bring Jonnassen home and give Mitchell its lone run of the game.

Van Johnson and Carter McCormick had two hits each, while Brennen Penne and Jonnassen had one each. Gavin Jones took the loss for Mitchell at the mound, allowing two runs in six innings and four strikeouts. Quinton Wilson working in relief recorded three strikeouts, while allowing three hits and two runs.

In Game 2, Mitchell scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead and followed that up in the fifth with a seven-run inning to close the contest.

Six players for Mitchell, including B. Penne, C. McCormick, V. Johnson, J. Ebert, D. Jonnassen and G. Jones had one hit each. Jonnassen led the team in RBIs with two, while McCormick led the team with two runs scored. Johnson picked up the win for Mitchell at the mound, pitching all five innings and surrendered five hits and three runs.
