Mitchell White and Mitchell Black are set for the state tournament

Jul. 27—MITCHELL — State tournament time for teener baseball is here and Mitchell Black and Mitchell White are set to play in the Class A 14-and-under and 13-and-under state tournaments this upcoming weekend in Pierre and Brookings, respectively.

Mitchell Black (15-25) will play at Hyde Stadium and Kelley Field in Pierre, in its pool play from July 28-30, in hopes to advance to the championship bracket on Sunday, July 31. Mitchell White (21-15-2) will play at Bob Shelden Field and Erv Huether Field in Brookings, in its pool play from July 28-30, in hopes to reach the championship bracket on Sunday, July 31 as well.

As of late, Mitchell Black has struggled in the month of July, losing seven of its last 10 games. The good news for Mitchell is that it's already beaten every team it will face in pool play during the weekend at least once throughout the season, including two wins against Pierre on Tuesday, June 28.

Jaxson Hartman leads the team with a batting average of .327, as well as hits with 32. Gavin Jones, Jacob Ebert, Brennen Penne and Kendan Skinner also have over 20 hits this season. Tyler Christensen leads Mitchell Black at the mound with 31 strikeouts and has only surrendered 15 hits.

Among the 14 teams in four separate pools in the 14-and-under state tournament, Mitchell Black is a part of the blue pool and will play Yankton on Thursday, July 28 at 5 p.m. at Hyde Stadium. At noon on Friday, Mitchell will face Sioux Falls East at Kelley Field. Saturday at Hyde Stadium, Mitchell Black will play Pierre at 6 p.m., essentially guaranteeing each team to play three games.

If Mitchell Black is able to win the blue pool, it will play the winner of the white pool on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hyde Stadium in the championship bracket. The winner of that game will advance to the ultimate championship game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Hyde Stadium.

As for Mitchell White, it's won seven straight games entering the state tournament and has at least scored six runs in each win. Lincoln Bottum leads the team with a batting average of .443 as well as hits with 39. Penn Long has recorded 31 hits this season, while Dawson Smith, Kaden Allen, Brayden Reindl and Denen Ellwein have over 20 hits. On the mound, Smith, Allen and Bottum all have over 33 strikeouts this season with at least 35 innings pitched.

Among the 12 teams in three separate pools in the 13-and-under state tournament, Mitchell White is part of the red pool and will play Huron on Thursday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field. At 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Mitchell will face Yankton at Bob Shelden Field and on Saturday, will play Watertown at 10 a.m. at Erv Huether Field.

If Mitchell White is able to win its pool, it will play in the championship bracket on Sunday. Depending on how pool play finishes will determine who is seeded where and if they will play at 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. The championship game will follow both of those games at 3:30 p.m.
