Mitchell wrestling wins season-debut dual with Chamberlain

Dec. 3—MITCHELL — It wasn't perfect but the Mitchell High School wrestling team won't argue with the end result of its dual contest on Friday night.

Helped by three forfeit victories, the Kernels outlasted Chamberlain for a 45-27 season-opening dual victory on Friday night at the MHS Gym.

"It's nice to get the win on the first dual of the year," Mitchell head coach Andy Everson said. "With this young crew, we had a lot of rookie mistakes. ... There were a few times where I could tell our conditioning isn't where we want it to be, so we're going to work on that. That's something we can improve before February but we've really spent a lot of time on technique early in the season."

One of the highlights of the night was the debut of girls wrestling at MHS, with four matches taking place for the first time in Kernel history. Frankie Kranz (106) and Danny Borja (126) each earned wins, while Chamberlain's Bailey Yost defeated the Kernels' Emma Trode at 113 pounds and Shelby Shrake (142) won over Borja. "Really cool moment to see that happen for the first time here at Mitchell," Everson said. "It's awesome for those kids to get that chance."

The dual was tied at 15-all after three consecutive Cubs wins by Isaac Shepherd (126), Xavier Donovan (132) and Devyn Anderson (138), but Kaiden Allen (145) and Jagger Tyler (160) each scored pins for pins to put Mitchell in front for good.

That was followed by Denen Ellwein picking up a win via forfeit at 170 pounds and Sean Foote earning a second-period pin over Chamberlain's Ty Graesser at 182 pounds for the Kernels to go up 39-21.

After Mitchell was open at 195 pounds, Seth Foote closed the dual with a pin at 220 pounds. Mitchell got a 5-4 decision from Colton Blow at 113 pounds to open the victories on the mat for the Kernels in the dual.

For Chamberlain, Canyon Burkard won the opening match of the night with a second-period pin over Carson Podhradsky at 220 pounds and Bryce Reuer did the same at 152 pounds against Kellan Odell.

Mitchell (1-0) is in action on Saturday at the Watertown Duals, where they will wrestle Canby (Minn.), Huron and Watertown in their pool before the afternoon placement rounds. Meanwhile, Chamberlain (0-1) heads south to O'Neill, Nebraska for a tournament on Saturday.
