Mitchell's Lizzie Tyler named to national volleyball academic honor list

Oct. 27—MITCHELL — Mitchell High School senior volleyball player Lizzie Tyler has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Best and Brightest Award list.

The award recognizes senior student-athletes that excel on the court and in the classroom, with students required to have a 3.5 grade-point average or better as a junior and play in 50% or more of their team's varsity sets during their senior season.

Nominations were made by coaches earlier this year and Tyler was named to the AVCA Best and Brightest first team with a GPA of at least 3.8. Tyler is one of 12 South Dakota volleyball players honored on the list, all of whom were placed on the first team.

For the Kernels this season, Tyler, an outside hitter, has played all 71 sets, with 219 kills, a .220 hitting percentage, 332 digs, 31 aces and 17 total blocks.

The 5-foot-7 Tyler is set to play college volleyball at Dakota Wesleyan University starting next fall.
