WASHINGTON — Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, didn’t rule out voting for President Joe Biden in a recent interview, calling GOP frontrunner former President Donald Trump a danger to the country.

The Utah lawmaker was asked Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" about Trump joking last week he would be a dictator only on "day one" of a second administration. Romney, one of Trump's most vocal critics, called the the former president a “human gumball machine” that spews out unfiltered thoughts.

“He just says whatever,” Romney said. “I don’t attach an enormous amount of impact to the particular words that come out and trying to evaluate each one of them.”

“I do think you should look at his record as president, and particularly in the last months of his presidency, and say this is a dangerous approach, this is an authoritarian approach. That gives me far more concern playing to the crowd as he did,” he added.

Asked what a second Trump term would look like for the country, Romney alleged the former president wouldn’t have people with experience and judgment around him, but rather those who could further divide the nation.

When asked who Romney would vote for if there is a Biden-Trump rematch in 2024, he said, “Well the Joe I would like to vote for is Joe Manchin,” adding that he doesn’t think Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will launch a presidential bid.

Manchin has flirted with the idea of running as a third-party candidate with No Labels, a bipartisan political organization that has sought to get on presidential ballots in all 50 states.

Pressed whether that meant he wouldn’t rule out voting for Biden, Romney said, “I’m not gonna describe who I’ll rule out other than President Trump.”

Though Romney noted that he and Biden don't agree on all issues, he argued that bad policy is something the country can address, but bad character is difficult to overcome.
