Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney traveled to Washington, D.C. Thursday to attend Paul Ryan's election as House speaker.
The Wisconsin Republican was Romney's running mate during the 2012 race.
Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, attended Ryan's election as speaker.
Romney praised the new speaker in a Facebook post, applauding his "lack of ego, respect for others, knowledge of government and unwavering character."
The Romneys also took a moment to snap a selfie with the newly-minted speaker:
Ryan is replacing outgoing House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who announced his retirement last month. After Boehner's presumed replacement House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) unexpectedly dropped out of the speaker's race, Republicans called on Ryan to step up to the plate. While he initially resisted, he acquiesced afterinsisting the GOP unite behind himand stressing he would not give up time with his family.
While deciding whether to run for the post, Ryanreportedlyturned to Romney for advice.
"I wouldn't presume to tell Paul what to do, but I do know that he is a man of ideas who is driven to see them applied for the public good," Romneysaidin a statement earlier this month.
