Mizell to Maryland: Cardinal Newman loses another offensive weapon to transfer portal

Cardinal Newman football is down another offensive weapon as athlete Tovani Mizell packs his bags for new beginnings in Maryland.

Citing "job opportunities" as the reason for his family's move up north, Mizell shared with The Post that he will be transferring to DeMatha Catholic High School (Hyattsville, MD) on Tuesday afternoon.

It's an additional offseason loss for Newman after former quarterback Davi Belfort transferred to Dillard (Miami) in December.

Mizell arrived to Newman from his freshman year at Stranahan (Fort Lauderdale) with offers from Texas A&M, Indiana, Cincinnati, University of Alabama-Birmingham and Arkansas, sending surefire signals of the impact he'd make for Crusaders.

Living up to his namesake, the "Boogeyman" posted 616 yards on the run and proved versatility midseason in the receiving room, catching for 481 yards — long of 76 — to score a combined 14 touchdowns in Newman's 2021 historic push to Class 3A regional finals.

College recruiters continued to take note of Mizell and his ability to transform not only his offense, but himself to best adapt to the needs of his team. The Class of 2024 prospect earned 17 more offers, including Georgia and, the latest, Oregon.

"I'm excited and look forward to whatever God has in store," Mizell said.

DeMatha is better known for its dominance on the baseball diamond or basketball alumni toppling NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. However, you could just as easily write home about the Stags sending touchdowns across the goal line.

The school has the seventh-most NFL draft picks out of any high school in the nation over the last two decades and maintains that at least 10 varsity seniors have received scholarships to college  "virtually every season."

Mizell will play under the direction of head coach Bill McGregor, who most recently led the Stags to a 7-3 record, having won more than 20 conference championships during a previous stint at DeMatha.
