'MJ,' 'Frozen,' 'Chicago,' 'Clue' among Broadway in Boston lineup for 2023-24 season

BOSTON − “MJ,” the Tony Award-winning musical featuring the hits of Michael Jackson, is among the nine upcoming offerings from Broadway in Boston.

The lineup of touring productions for the 2023-24 season was announced Wednesday afternoon and begins this October with Disney crowd-pleaser “Frozen” returning for a three-week run at the Citizens Bank Opera House.

The rest of the slate is a mix of new-to-Boston musicals, revivals and crowd-pleasing return engagements, including “Chicago,” “The Book of Mormon,” "Company" and “Les Misérables.”

Shows making their Boston debut are “Girl From the North Country,” with songs by Bob Dylan; and, in a departure from the usual musical offerings, the play “Clue,” a whodunit based on the popular Hasbro board game.

After its 2018 pre-Broadway tryout, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” also comes back to the city that started it all with a winter engagement on Washington Street.

Tivon Marcus, vice president of Broadway in Boston, said the season features a slate of “uplifting and rousing” productions.

“Over the past year we have been energized and inspired by Broadway in Boston audiences who continue to turn out night after night enjoying the shared experience of live theater,” Marcus said.

Here’s the slate:

"Disney's Frozen," Oct. 25 to Nov. 12, Citizens Bank Opera House − It looks like no one can "Let It Go," as the Broadway musical adaptation of the smash Disney animated movie comes to Boston for a return engagement.

“Chicago,” Nov. 28 to Dec. 3, Emerson Colonial Theatre − The razzle-dazzle 25th-anniversary tour of the Bob Fosse show about gold diggers and gin joints is always worth a trip to the theater. If you haven't seen it yet, do.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” Jan. 16 to Feb. 4, 2024, Citizens Bank Opera House − This splashy, tragic romance set to music was the first on the boards in 2018 at the restored Emerson Colonial Theatre. An adaptation of the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie, the musical tells the story of a doomed love between a writer and a dancer.

“The Book of Mormon,” Feb. 13-18, 2024, Citizens Bank Opera House − Song, dance and sacrilege take center stage as this returning favorite entertainingly pushes the limits.

“Girl From the North Country,” March 12-24, 2024, Emerson Colonial Theatre − Playwright Conor McPherson’s show is set in Duluth, Minnesota, during the Great Depression with a story built around 20 reimagined songs from Bob Dylan, including “Forever Young,” “All Along the Watchtower” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”

“Company,” April 2-14, 2024, Citizens Bank Opera House − The songs and music of Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy take to the stage next spring in Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott’s new production. It features numbers such as "Side by Side by Side" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," while exploring the contemporary themes of marriage, commitment, friendship and love.

 “Clue,” April 30 to May 5, Emerson Colonial Theatre − Murder and blackmail are on the menu in the mystery/comedy based on the popular board game. Six mysterious guests gather at Boddy Manor for an unusual dinner party. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects and race to find the killer as the body count rises.

“Les Misérables,” Aug. 13-25, 2024, Citizens Bank Opera House − After all these years, audiences still love Victor Hugo's story about the tragic Jean Valjean and his journey through the prisons, slums and barricades of the 19th century, with music to match.

“MJ,”  June 18 to July 7, 2024, Citizens Bank Opera House − The four-time Tony winner will be “startin’ somethin’”' in its Boston premiere. The show, which centers on the making of Michael Jackson’s 1992-93 Dangerous World Tour, was created by Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.
