Be MKE: A giant Giannis mural, Mother's Day and Brett Favre news?

Who we are. Where we go. What we need to know.

What do Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brent Suter and Jacques Cousteau's grandson, Philippe Cousteau Jr., have in common?

They're both helping local students learn about sustainability. I got to swing by American Family Field this week to find out how.

This spring, the Brewers, the EarthEcho International nonprofit (founded by Cousteau) and Racine-headquartered SC Johnson teamed up to create the “Waste-Free Crew," an educational initiative that gives local educators ways to teach students about environmentally friendly practices.

Hundreds of kids visited the ballpark Tuesday to participate in interactive workshops and activities with community organizations that complemented what they had learned in their classrooms. Here's more on that.

Let’s talk business

Guess how many ground-floor businesses in Water Street's nightlife area aren't a tavern or restaurant. One — but not for long. The historic building that houses A. Werner Silversmiths Inc., 1241 N. Water St., is planning to become the home of Water Street University, a tavern operated by Steggeman Investments LLC, according to a new building permit application filed with the city Department of Neighborhood Services.

If you've been to The Beer Garden in Deer District for a Milwaukee Bucks playoff game this year, you may have noticed a change. The Tap Room has been transformed into The Tanduay Tiki Hut, which features tropical cocktails. The stand's original menu of hard seltzers and draft and can beer options is still being offered as well.

An Italian-style café is planning to open in Walker's Point this summer. It would be Vendetta Coffee Bar's second location; its other is in Wauwatosa's village district. The Milwaukee location, 524 S. Second St., would not only be a coffee shop, but also a Negroni and spritz bar.

Out and about

Where are you watching the Kentucky Derby Saturday? If you're not sure yet, here are some ideas, from Maxie's 15th annual Derby Day party to the St. James 1868 Kentucky Derby Party (which is also the grand opening celebration of the wedding and special event space).

Hey downtowners, a new farmers market is coming your way. The Brewery District — the revitalized former Pabst Brewing Co. complex — is launching a farmers market at Preservation Park, 925 W. Juneau Avenue. It will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Fridays from June 10 through Oct. 28. Live entertainment and a Best Place Beer Garden will run until 7 p.m.

Don’t go hangry

Happy early Mother's Day to all of you moms out there. And a very special S/O to mine. With the holiday coming up Sunday, here's a list of restaurants and nearby resorts offering special menus for it.

Bavette la Boucherie, a restaurant and butcher shop, has moved a few blocks to the former site of Swig restaurant, 217 N. Broadway. The new space features an expanded menu, espresso machine and more retail items. Reservations are recommended for the restaurant.

And a Flourchild update: The long-awaited downtown pizzeria, which has been offering takeout since March, opened its dining room Friday. The restaurant, 722 N. Milwaukee St., was created by Andrew Miller, the chef-owner of Third Coast Provisions and Merriment Social.

Here are the talkers

As I'm sure you've heard, a draft decision obtained by Politico showed the U.S. Supreme Court voted to strike down the court's landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. If the opinion holds and the 1973 decision is overturned, here's what that would mean for Wisconsin.

Graduation is around the corner and Milwaukee's ceremonies are going to be star-studded this year. Marquette University's commencement speaker will be basketball legend Dwyane Wade, one of the most recognizable alumnus in the school's history. Academy Award-nominated actor and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alumnus Willem Dafoe will give the commencement address at his alma mater and will receive his honorary doctorate. Both ceremonies are scheduled for May 22.

Milwaukee artist and Bucks fan Mauricio Ramirez is painting a photorealistic three-story mural of Giannis Antetokounmpo on the east façade of the 600 EAST building, at 600 East Wisconsin Ave. The groups behind it are the Bucks, the Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District and 600 EAST. Ramirez expects to have the mural completed this week.

And we have some ... Brett Favre news? The Green Bay Packers legend and NFL Hall of Famer is going to do a weekly half-hour interview on the "Jen, Gabe & Chewy" show on WKTI-FM (94.5), aka ESPN Milwaukee, starting at the end of August.
