2022 MLB Draft tracker: Where players with Oklahoma connections are headed

The state of Oklahoma took center stage early in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Jackson Holliday, a shortstop out of Stillwater High School, was selected first overall by the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday night to become the highest pick Oklahoma has had straight out of high school.

Here is a look at the players drafted with Oklahoma connections:

Round: 1 | Overall pick: 1 | Team: Baltimore Orioles

In 40 games this spring, Holliday recorded a .685 batting average with 17 home runs and 79 runs batted in. He also tallied 37 singles, 29 doubles and six triples. All of his 89 hits gave him the most by any player in the nation, breaking Philadelphia Phillies and former Carl Albert Titan JT Realmuto’s record of 88. And Holliday not only hit for power, but he was a force on the base paths, stealing 30 bases this season.

Round: 1 | Overall pick: 7 | Team: Chicago Cubs

A former Norman High standout, Horton underwent Tommy John surgery as a freshman and seemingly didn’t miss a beat this past season. The 6-1, 211-pound right-handed pitcher went 5-2 with a 4.86 ERA while recording 64 strikeouts in 53 ⅔ innings. Horton boosted his stock in the College World Series. In two starts against Notre Dame and Ole Miss, the redshirt freshman struck out 24 batters and allowed four runs in 13 ⅓ innings pitched. Horton received Freshman All-America honors by Baseball America and D1Baseball for his efforts.

Justin Campbell, Oklahoma State

Round: Competitive Balance Round A | Overall pick: 37 | Team: Cleveland Guardians

The Cowboys’ 6-foot-7, 219-pound ace right-handed pitcher was a two-time All-American with big strikeout numbers. Last season, he struck out a career-high 141 punchouts, a year after totaling 102. The 141 were fifth highest in program history. Armed with a mid-90s fastball and an even-better changeup, Campbell threw a no-hitter at Kansas in the 2021 season. This spring, he was 9-2 with a 3.82 ERA as he was a first-time selection on the NCBWA All-American team.

Round: 2 | Overall pick: 45 | Team: Washington Nationals

Bennett was commonly referred to by OU head coach Skip Johnson as the program’s “poster boy,” and for good reason. The 6-6, 234-pound ace left-handed pitcher went 10-4 with a 3.69 ERA this past season while recording a team-high 133 strikeouts in 117 innings. Bennett showed an ability to be a workhorse pitcher at the next level. The Bixby native pitched at least six innings in 13 of his 19 starts. Bennett received second-team All-America honors from Baseball America and D1Baseball for his strong play.

Peyton Graham, Oklahoma

Round: 2 | Overall pick: 51 | Team: Detroit Tigers

The Sooners’ 6-4, 171-pound redshirt sophomore infielder brought power to the lineup. Graham registered team-highs of 20 home runs, 71 RBIs and 75 runs scored on .335 hitting this past season. He also stole a team-high 34 bases, making him the first player in program history to record at least 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season. Graham was named a first-team All-American by Baseball America, D1Baseball and NCBWA.

Nolan McLean, Oklahoma State

Round: 3 | Overall pick: 81 | Team: Baltimore Orioles

A two-way force for the Cowboys, McLean was selected as a pitcher by the Orioles. The hard-throwing right-hander became OSU’s closer last season, touching 100 mph while recording five saves and going 2-1. He struck out 39 batters in 25 1/3 innings. McLean was also one of the Cowboys’ most dangerous hitters, leading the team with 19 home runs. A former walk-on quarterback, McLean was picked at three different positions on the All-Big 12 Team this season.

Trevor Martin, Oklahoma State

Round: 3 | Overall pick: 104 | Team: Tampa Bay Rays

A big right-hander from Asher, Martin started last season as the Cowboys’ closer before converting to a starting role. He was 4-3 with nine saves. Armed with a fastball that sits in the upper-90s, he tied a program record with 16 strikeouts in OSU’s epic 29-15 win over Missouri State in a regional tournament elimination game. That came after OSU fell behind 12-0, forcing Martin to come out of the bullpen to solidify the game.

Jimmy Crooks, Oklahoma

Round: 4 | Overall pick: 127 | Team: St. Louis Cardinals

Crooks served as the anchor for OU behind the plate this past season. The 6-foot, 218-pound redshirt sophomore recorded nine home runs, 51 RBIs and 49 runs scored on .305 hitting. Crooks also played a key role on defense by throwing out 20 of the 45 stolen-base attempts. He received a spot on the Central All-Region Second Team.

Victor Mederos, Oklahoma State

Round: 6 | Overall pick: 178 | Team: Los Angeles Angels

A talented right-hander who defected from Cuba as a child, Mederos spent one season with the Cowboys after transferring from Miami. The 6-foot-2, 227-pound sophomore was 4-4 with a 5.59 ERA, primarily starting on Saturdays. He struck out 62 batters and walked 21 over 66 innings. He finished the season strong with impressive starts against Baylor and Texas. He was also strong in the regional opener against Missouri State.

Roman Phansalkar, Oklahoma State

Round: 7 | Overall pick: 208 | Team: Los Angeles Angels

Phansalkar, a Heritage Hall graduate, had a career year after reinventing himself with a new arm slot and powerful sinker/two-seam fastball. The right-hander had a 3.46 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings, providing stability in late-inning, high-leverage situations. He began his college career at Arizona, but underwent Tommy John surgery before throwing a single pitch in a game. He played five seasons at OSU.

Blake Robertson, Oklahoma

Round: 7 | Overall pick: 224 | Team: Tampa Bay Rays

The 6-5, 200-pound redshirt sophomore first baseman heard his name get called in the MLB Draft for the second time after being selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 26th round of the 2019 draft. Robertson instead spent his first two seasons at OSU and Cowley College before arriving at OU last offseason. The Edmond native recorded five home runs, 52 RBIs, and 62 runs scored on .300 hitting with the Sooners. He was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

Round: 8 | Overall pick: 240 | Team: San Diego Padres

One season in Stillwater made Doersching a folk hero. The 6-foot-4, 251-pound slugger sported a viking look with a bleach-blonde mohawk and a plethora of tattoos. And he hit bombs. The Northern Kentucky graduate transfer who once won the College World Series home run derby hit 15 for the Pokes, including two over 500 feet.

Caeden Trenkle, Oklahoma State

Round: 9 | Overall pick: 274 | Team: Oakland Athletics

A talented center fielder known for his diving catches, the third-year player primarily platooned this season. A left-handed hitter, he primarily faced right-handers. He batted .302 with six home runs, eight doubles and two triples in 53 games. He closed out the season strong with multiple hits in six of his final eight games.

Round: 10 | Overall pick: 290 | Team: Pittsburgh PiratesThe Sooners’ 6-foot, 188-pound redshirt senior outfielder burst onto the national radar in his final season of college eligibility. Tredaway registered nine home runs, 66 RBIs and 63 runs scored with a team-high batting average of .370. Tredaway made the College World Series All-Tournament team in addition to the Central All-Region Second Team.

Trevin Michael, Oklahoma

Round: 10 | Overall pick: 297 | Team: Detroit TigersMichael served as OU’s go-to closer this past season after arriving as a graduate transfer from Lamar. The 6-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher recorded a team-best 2.89 ERA and 10 saves, which tied for the 26th-highest total in the nation. A Piedmont native, Michael is the fourth Oklahoma-bred Sooner to be taken off the board in this year’s draft.

Brock Rodden, Wichita State

Round: 10 | Overall pick: 304 | Team: Oakland Athletics

An Oktaha product, Rodden was named to the AAC’s All-Conference first team along with newcomer position player of the year. He led the Shockers with a .338 batting average, .441 on-base percentage and .653 slugging percentage. His 17 homers were the most in program history since Drew Moffitt hit 26 in 2004. He began his career at Seminole State.

Isaac Coffey, Oral Roberts University

Round: 10 | Overall pick: 309 | Team: Boston Red Sox

A two-way player for the Golden Eagles, the Red Sox picked Coffey as a pitcher. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander was 7-6 with a 3.77 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings last spring. He was the 2021 Summit League Pitcher of the Year.

Round: 11 | Overall pick: 325 | Team: Kansas City Royals

Sandlin brought depth to the bullpen in his lone season with OU after transferring from Eastern Oklahoma State College. The 6-4, 215-pound right-handed pitcher from Owasso went 9-4 with a 5.59 ERA. He tallied 102 strikeouts in 95 innings pitched. Sandlin's best performance came in the College World Series semifinals. He recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run to help OU defeat Texas A&M.

Miguel Fulgencio, Cowley County CC

Round: 13 | Overall pick: 380 | Team: Pittsburgh Pirates

A former walk-on football player at Oklahoma State, the talented left-hander from Sequoyah Claremore High School spent the past three seasons at Cowley County (Kansas) Community College, where he went 13-1 with a 2.21 ERA in two active seasons. He struck out 103 batters. Fulgencio committed last spring to OU.

Round: 13 | Overall pick: 387 | Team: Detroit Tigers

A speedy center fielder, the Edmond Santa Fe graduate started 57 games in his lone season with Kansas State and had a breakout season. He led the team in average (.345), on-base percentage (.419), slugging percentage (.593), doubles (20), runs scored (45) and stolen bases (12). It was certainly a big boost for a player who started his career at Oklahoma State, but only appeared in 10 games as a freshman.

Jackson Loftin, Oral Roberts University

Round: 13 | Overall pick: 403 | Team: Houston Astros

An infielder who transferred from Sam Houston State, Loftin started 58 games last spring at ORU, batting .349 with 10 homers and 14 doubles. He also stole 25 bases, being caught just five times. He was named to the Summit League’s All-Conference first team.

Bryce Osmond, Oklahoma State

Round: 15 | Overall pick: 448 | Team: Los Angeles Angels

A talented right-handed pitcher from Jenks, Osmond started to really emerge last spring before a shoulder injury late in the regular season shut him down. He had a 4.75 ERA in 60 2/3 innings while striking out 77 batters and walking 31.

Round: 16 | Overall pick: 488 | Team: Toronto Blue Jays

A reliable reliever for the Cowboys for three seasons, Davis is leaving Stillwater even if he doesn’t sign. He announced earlier this offseason his intentions to transfer to OU, near where he starred at Westmoore High school. With OSU, he had a 4.25 ERA in 42 1/3 innings last spring. He struck out 56 batters.

Chazz Martinez, Oklahoma

Round: 17 | Overall pick: 505 | Team: Kansas City Royals

After being selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft, Martinez instead opted to continue his college career. The 6-3, 210-pound left-handed pitcher transferred from Orange Coast College to OU this past offseason and provided value in his lone campaign with the Sooners. Martinez went 4-3 with a 5.32 ERA and tallied 67 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings pitched.

Javier Ramos, Oklahoma

Round: 18 | Overall pick: 536 | Team: Colorado Rockies

A former Vian High School standout, Ramos spent one season at Seminole State College before transferring to OU in 2021. The 6-6, 206-pound right-handed pitcher went 1-1 this past season and posted a 5.16 ERA. Ramos made 15 appearances and recorded 24 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings pitched.

Round: 18 | Overall pick: 542 Team: Philadelphia Phillies

A former Yukon High School star, Wimmer has been a two-year starter at South Carolina, starting in all but one game the past two seasons. Last spring, the infielder batted .312 with 38 runs, 13 doubles, seven homers and 35 RBIs. He also stole 13 of 14 bases.

Round: 19 | Overall pick: 579 | Team: Boston Red Sox

Godman is a redshirt junior who spent all four of his college years at OU. The 6-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher made 20 appearances this past season. He went 1-0 and posted a 6.98 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings pitched.
