Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall on the Florida southwest coast Wednesday afternoon. After it pushes across Florida, the storm is expected to weaken but could hit Savannah area as a tropical storm.

The major impacts from Hurricane Ian will be seen across Florida and parts of Georgia coast. In the Atlanta area, it is still uncertain how much of an impact there will be.

Severe Weather Team 2 says the rain will begin and wind increase later Friday afternoon and evening through Saturday morning. Meteorologist Brian Monahan says areas east of Atlanta could possibly see 1-4 inches of rain while areas west of Atlanta could see less than an inch.

A team spokesperson told Channel 2 Action News that team and league officials are monitoring the storm and whether games need to change or relocate.

“If changes need to be made, we will communicate as soon as they are finalized.”

The Braves are also watching for Ian’s impacts on its spring training home.

The team opened CoolToday Park in 2019. The facility is located in North Port just a few miles north of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, which is where Ian is expected to make its landfall.

The Braves says the park was built to Florida hurricane standards. As a precaution, the organization did take down all flags and banners.

“We’ve also removed some things from the rooftop and have sandbagged any potential water entry areas. Our shatterproof windows have been boarded up as an extra precaution,” the team said.
