MLB pitcher Andrew Heaney among Putnam City's 2022 athletics Hall of Fame inductees

Putnam City Schools announced Tuesday its 2022 athletics Hall of Fame class.

A committee made up of administration, former athletes and coaches select the inductees. High school, collegiate and professional accomplishments are all considered.

This year’s inductees includes Putnam City’s Andrew Heaney, Kelly Phelps, Bill Watts and Jerry Potter; Putnam North’s Trent Fisher, John Fitzgerald, Jennifer (Hall) O’Dell and Bob Wilson; and Putnam West’s Ashli (Barrett) Wigington, Steve Neff, Johnny Thompson and Scott Tinsley.

Additionally, for the first time, a special group will be inducted together. The inaugural group will be the Vann family from Putnam City. The family members include Bryatt Vann, Bryce Vann, Bruce Vann, Brandy Vann and Brento Vann.

This year’s induction ceremony and dinner will be held at Victory Church (4300 N MacArthur Blvd) on Thursday, Aug. 18. For ticket information, contact the Putnam City District Athletics Office at 405-495-5200.

Heaney was an All-State pitcher in 2009 and playd collegiately at Oklahoma State. The Miami Marlins drafted Heaney in the first round, and he also has spent time with the Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees and is currently with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Phelps won three football state championships, playing in all facets. He was named Co-Player of the Year in 1977. He went on to play at OU as a quarterback and started for the Sooners in 1981-82.

Watts played linebacker for the Pirates. He went on to play guard for the Sooners and then played for the NFL’s Houston Oilers. Watts had a career in professional wrestling, and he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.

The late Potter is Putnam City’s most decorated football coach. His teams won state titles in 1974, ‘75 and ‘77 and had a career record of 171-67-8. He’s in the National High School Hall of Fame.

Putnam North's Fisher starred in multiple sports. But he guided the Panthers to the 1990 state title football game, losing to USA Today’s top-ranked team in the country, Lawton Eisenhower. His senior year, he led Putnam North to the championship, was Player of the Year and earned a scholarship to Oklahoma State.

Fitzgerald is the only football player from the Putnam City School District to ever appear on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. An All-State offensive lineman, he flourished at Central Oklahoma after starting at Oklahoma State. He’s in the UCO Hall of Fame as a three-time All-American.

O’Dell went 109-1 during her tennis career, only losing in the state title match her freshman year. She played at Notre Dame, earning All-America honors three times. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Tennis Hall of Fame in 2013.

Former Putnam North football coach Bob Wilson will be inducted into the school district's athletics hall of fame. Wilson led the Panthers to 150 wins and the playoffs 15 times during his 22 years at the school.

Wilson coached Putnam North for 22 years, taking them to two state championship games and the playoffs 15 times. He also coached future Heisman Trophy winner and OU quarterback Sam Bradford. The Panthers collected 150 under Wilson.

Putnam West's Wigington earned All-State honors in softball and basketball in 1997. She played softball at OU, earning four All-Big 12 selections and two All-America honors. She was on OU’s first national championship team.

Neff was The Oklahoman’s Super 5 Player of the Year in 1974, and he started in college at Oklahoma. He transferred to Bethany Nazarene, now known as Southern Nazarene, where he earned All-America honors in 1978 and was drafted by Golden State. He is one of three Putnam City athletes drafted into the NBA.

Thompson was a state wrestling champion, compiling a 38-0 record his senior year and a 136-11 career mark. He wrestled at Oklahoma State, winning titles as a sophomore and junior and was a four-time All-American.

Tinsley quarterbacked the Patriots to the state finals in football in 1977 and was Co-Player of the Year. He was also an All-City baseball player. He played football at USC and won a national title in 1978. He also played for the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Vann family at Putnam City played in multiple sports, but were known for their prowess on the football field.

Bryce Vann Jr. was a Parade All-American running back in 1978 and was a starting running back on the undefeated 1977 state championship team. He went on to be the District 9 rushing leader, twice, as a running back at Cameron University.

Bruce Vann rushed for 958 yards for Central State’s (now UCO) 1983 playoff team.

The late Brento Vann was an All-State running back and Oil Bowl selection as a senior. He earned Junior College All-American honors at Pasadena Community College before playing two seasons at Central State, where he rushed for 2,456 yards.

Brandy Vann had an eight-year professional baseball career that peaked in 1993 when he played for Norfolk, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. He was the California Angels' first-round draft pick in 1986.

Bryatt Vann averaged 16.9 points per game for the 1992-93 OU basketball team.
