Giants sign first-round pick Bednar below slot value originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
The Giants' first choice from the 2021 MLB Draft officially has joined the organization, as Will Bednar has signed for $3.65 million with San Francisco, MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis reported Friday afternoon. The Giants announced the signing of Bednar later on Friday afternoon, also adding that 15 of the team's 20 selections now are under contract.
Bednar could have gotten as much as $4.03 million for being the 14th overall pick, but he will join the Giants at several hundred thousand dollars less.
The Mississippi State product helped lead the Bulldogs to a College World Series title in 2021, winning Most Outstanding Player of the CWS after posting a 1.47 ERA over 18 1/3 innings in Omaha.
Bednar, 21, likely will land somewhere in the No. 9 to No. 13 range on the Giants' top prospects list once the index is updated with this year's draft picks, NBC Sports Bay Area's Dalton Johnson predicts.
The former Bulldog wasn't the only Giants draft pick to sign his contract on Friday, as second-round selection Matt Mikuslski out of Fordham signed for $1.2 million, just a few hundred thousand dollars below the slot value of the 50th overall pick.
