MLGW issues precautionary boil water advisory for some areas

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Light Gas and Water issued a precautionary boil water advisory for about 15% of its customers Thursday. The areas included are outlined in pink in the map above.

Before drinking, cooking or making ice, boil tap water for one minute. There is no reason to believe there is any contamination, MLGW officials said.

Earlier Thursday, MLGW asked all customers to limit non-essential water use because of low pressure in the system.

“Demand for water over the past 24 hours has increased, and there are low pressures in some areas of the system. Undiscovered and unrepaired leaks are the suspected culprits,” the utility said.

MLGW said it has repaired 27 broken water mains since Saturday and is working on two more.

The utility said customers can stop dripping faucets briefly while the temperature rises above freezing Thursday afternoon, then resume when temperatures go back down below 32.
