MLK weekend sports TV schedule, listings: NFL playoffs, NBA games highlight what to watch

Here are some of the best games to watch from Jan. 13 through Jan. 16, with the NFL playoffs and NBA taking center stage.

Friday, Jan. 13

NBA: Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs, 5:30 p.m., ESPN

A lot of people are going to be watching this game in person as the Spurs are expected to set a new NBA single-game attendance record for this game in the Alamodome. You can watch it from the comforts of your own home.

NBA: Phoenix Suns at Minnesota Timberwolves, 6 p.m., Bally Sports Arizona, Bally Sports North

Yes, neither team has played particularly well as of late, but both teams have the potential to be a contender in the Western Conference if they can get their act together.

Men's college basketball VCU at Dayton, 7 p.m., ESPN2

This is a big Atlantic 10 Conference game with both teams 12-5 overall. Dayton is 4-0 in conference play. VCU is 3-1. Dayton has won seven straight and is 9-0 at home.

NBA: Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers, 8 p.m., ESPN

The Nuggets enter the weekend tied with the Memphis Grizzlies for the best record in the Western Conference, but they are only 10-10 away from home. The Clippers are 12-9 at home.

Men's college basketball: Utah State at Nevada, 9 p.m., FS1

Both of these teams could have a say in the Mountain West title race with Nevada 4-1 in conference play and 14-4 overall and Utah State 3-1 and 14-3. Nevada hasn't lost at home this season (8-0).

Women's college basketball: Stanford at UCLA, 9 p.m., Pac-12 Networks

This could be a very interesting game with UCLA (14-2 overall, 3-1 Pac-12) looking to upset the 16-1 Cardinal, who are 4-0 in Pac-12 play. UCLA is 8-0 at home this season. Stanford is 4-0 away from home.

Saturday, Jan. 14

Men's college basketball: Kentucky at Tennessee, 10 a.m., ESPN

Kentucky is just 10-6 on the season and some are questioning the Wildcats' head coach. A win over Top 5-Tennessee would go a long way in quieting some critics.

NBA: Milwaukee Bucks at Miami Heat, 11 a.m., ABC

The Heat are just 23-20 on the season, but are 7-3 over their last 10. These teams have had some very memorable games over the years and this could be another.

Men's college basketball: Kansas State at TCU, noon, ESPN2

Kansas State is 15-1 overall on the season. TCU is 13-3. The Big 12 is loaded and these teams could have a big say down the stretch in the conference.

Men's college basketball: Iowa State at Kansas, 2 p.m., Big 12 Network

Did we just mention the loaded Big 12? Iowa State is 13-2. Kansas is 15-1. Both are unbeaten in conference play. Only one will be after Saturday.

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers, 2:30 p.m., Fox

The Seahawks went 9-8 on the season and snuck into the playoffs with the NFC's final Wild Card playoff berth. The 49ers went 13-4 and are the No. 2 seed. The 49ers beat the Seahawks twice this season: 27-7 in Week 2 and 21-13 in Week 15.

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Jacksonville Jaguars, 6:15 p.m., NBC, Peacock

The 10-7 Chargers are the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs, the non-division winner with the best record. The No. 4 seeded Jaguars won the AFC South with a 9-8 record to get the home playoff game. The Jaguars beat the Chargers in Week 3, 38-10.

Sunday, Jan. 15

Men's college basketball: Marquette at Xavier, 10 a.m., Fox

An interesting Big East Sunday morning showdown. Marquette is 14-4 and 6-1 in conference. Xavier is 14-3 and 6-0. Xavier has won 10 straight. Marquette has won five in a row.

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills, 11 a.m., CBS, Paramount+

The Dolphins are the last seed in the AFC and went 9-8 on the season. The Bills are the No. 2 seed after going 13-3. The Dolphins beat the Bills in Miami in Week 3, 21-19, but the Bills beat the Dolphins in Buffalo in Week 15, 32-29.

Women's college basketball: Arizona vs. Utah, noon, Pac-12 Networks

If someone not named Stanford wins the conference, it might be one of these teams. Arizona is 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Utah is 14-1 and 3-1.

NFL: New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings, 2:30 p.m., Fox

The Giants, the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs, went 9-7-1 on the season. The No. 3 seeded Vikings went 13-4. Minnesota edged New York at home in a Week 16 thriller, 27-24.

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals, 6:15 p.m., NBC, Peacock

The Ravens took the No. 6 seed in the AFC postseason after a 10-7 record in the regular season. The Bengals went 12-4 to win the AFC North and get the No. 3 seed. These teams just played in Week 18, a 27-16 win for Cincinnati. Baltimore won a Week 5 game between the two, 19-17.

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Los Angeles Lakers, 7:30 p.m., NBA TV

As bad as the Lakers have been at times this season, they are just 1.5 games back of the No. 7 seed in the NBA's Western Conference.

Monday, Jan. 16

NBA: Boston Celtics at Charlotte Hornets, 11 a.m., NBA TV

The East's best against the East's worst. The Hornets, interestingly, have more wins on the road this season (6) than at home (5).

Men's college basketball: Purdue at Michigan State, 12:30 p.m., Fox

Purdue is 15-1 and Michigan State is 12-4. Both are 4-1 in the Big Ten. This could be a pivotal conference game.

NBA: Miami Heat at Atlanta Hawks, 1:30 p.m., TNT

The Hawks entered the weekend three games back of the Heat for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. They'd love to make up some ground here.

Phoenix Suns at Memphis Grizzlies, 4 p.m., TNT

The Grizzlies beat the Suns, 125-100 on Dec. 23. The Suns beat the Grizzlies, 125-108 on Dec. 28. Who will win on MLK Day?

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 6:15 p.m., ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+

The Cowboys were 12-5 in the regular season to land the NFC's No. 5 seed as the top wild card team. The Buccaneers were just 8-9, but got the No. 4 seed and home playoff game as the winner of the NFC South. The Buccaneers beat the Cowboys in Week 1, 19-3.

NBA: Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers, 8:30 p.m., NBA TV

The Rockets may not win many games (10-31 record), but they have had some exciting games this season. Perhaps the MLK weekend will end with another?
