Moberly starts NJCAA Tournament with double-OT win

Jenny Ntambwe scored 14 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter and later, and Moberly Area rallied for a 64-56 victory in double overtime over Barton Community College in Wednesday's first game of the women's basketball NJCAA Tournament at the Rip Griffin Center.

T'Aaliyah Miner added 15 points and 19 rebounds for Moberly (29-3), the No. 17 seed in the 24-team field.

Jenny Womsi had 19 points and 17 rebounds for No. 16 seed Barton (28-6), which led by 12 points early in the fourth quarter.

Shelton State 72, Monroe 48

Nya Valentine poured in 21 points, Mya Barnes added 16 and ninth-seeded Shelton State ran away from No. 24 seed Monroe College early.

Maya Cunningham added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bucs (31-3), who led 33-12 at halftime.

Walters State 76, Casper 67

Kailyn Farrell finished with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Tyasia Reed added 21 points, hitting four of her five 3-point goals in the second half, as No. 18 seed Walters State (26-4) rallied past No. 15 seed Casper College.

For most of the game, Casper (30-4) used its back-cut and pick-and-roll game to perfection, so much so that the Lady Thunderbirds outscored the Lady Senators 50-30 on points in the paint. They led 26-14 after one quarter.

Cochise 63, Collin 52

Alayna Contreras scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half as No. 23 seed Cochise College toppled No. 10 seed Collin College in the biggest upset on the first day of the tournament.

Contreras' effort helped make up for an off game by Cochise’s leading scorer, Maeva Fortuna Ngnawo, who suffered from early foul trouble.

Andjela Bigovic added 12 points and Jessenia Lawson 10 for the Lady Apaches (28-5). Waiata Jennings led Collin (29-3) with 17 points, and Mackenzie Buss added 11.

New Mexico JC 48, Dodge City 38

Danna Grenald scored all but two of her 14 points in the second half, including six points in a decisive 11-0 run late in the third quarter, and No. 20 seed New Mexico Junior College pulled away from No. 13 seed Dodge City Community College.

Sandra Magolico, who provided most of the offense for the Lady Thunderbirds (26-5) in the first half, added a game-high 18 points for NMJC, which advances to the second round on Friday to face No. 4 seed College of Southern Idaho at 1 p.m.

Leah Mufua led Dodge City (29-4) with 10 points before fouling out.

North Dakota SCS 72

Eastern Arizona 66

Arianna Berryhill had six points in a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter, then iced the game with two free throws with 6.5 seconds left as No. 21 seed North Dakota State College of Science rallied past No. 12 seed Eastern Arizona.

Berryhill finished with a game-high 24 points, leading a group of four players scoring in double figures. Charita Lewis added 14 points, Ivy Fox 12 — including a 3-point goal with 31 seconds left that put the game out of reach — and Quinn Neppl 11

The win, the first for NDSCS at the national tournament in program history, vaults the Lady Wildcats (30-4) into the second round where they will face No. 5 seed Blinn College at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Skye Miller led Eastern Arizona (29-2) with 12 points. Tiara Bolden added 11 and Shalance Montoya 10.
