Model train shop celebrating two decades of business with Myerstown community event

A Myerstown model train store will celebrate its 20th year in business in style with a live ice sculpture carving from local artist Katie Trainer and more, hosting an event just in time for the holidays.

The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Brian's Model Train located at 101 W. Main Ave. in Myerstown.

“This time of year is always special," store owner Brain Saul said. “A lot of families come in, and they’re buying that first train set for under the Christmas tree, and I get to help them out.”

“But it went fast, 20 years, I can’t believe it.”

The shop sells anything to do with model trains, and all the supplies needed to build and operated them for all skill levels. More broadly, the store sells anything to do with train enthusiasm including DVDs, books, calendars and magazines.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. and will be held rain or shine.

Saul attributed much of his success to keeping up with the community, both locally and within the niche of model railroading, saying that he has built a loyal customer base from frequently attending train shows during the early years of the business.

In addition to the ice carving, free giveaways and refreshments, special anniversary pricing will be posted throughout the shop and Saul’s personal collection of model trains and rail roads will be on display at the second floor of the shop.

Saul, who opens his shop on a part-time basis as he currently works a separate full-time job, said that the shop will be open five days a week until Christmas.

The street will be shut down during the event, and parking is available across from the shop.

“The street will be blocked off for through traffic because she’ll be having chainsaws and stuff and I don’t anyone really close,” Saul said, “She’s done these, but I don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

Giveaways and refreshments will be held outside on the streets, under tents.

The ice sculpture will be displayed outside of the storefront until it melts, Saul said.

“It’ll stay out as long as it’s there,” he said, “that’s the best part about this stuff, no cleanup, it just melts away.”

This event coincides with National Lionel Train Day, an annual event celebrating model trains. The 2022 National Lionel Train Day boxcar will be available for purchase.

Brian’s Model Trains is participating in the annual collection of gently used or now stuffed animals for Gabby’s Acts of Kindness charity in support of the Hershey Bears teddy bear toss.
