Modernism Week 2023: Bohemian and Hollywood regency styles bring 'Yoasis' home to life
Tucked away in Palm Springs' Indian Canyons neighborhood is the tranquil "Yoasis" home that seamlessly blends Bohemian and Hollywood regency styles into one uniquely chic getaway.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom home, designed by Hal Lacy and built in 1965, is one of this year's Modernism Week featured homes. A renovation was recently completed by Grace Home Furnishing, giving the house a bright revamp.
"Yoasis" gets its name from its location on Yosemite Drive and its appeal as an oasis of vacation-minded tranquility.
The home's white exterior with black trim might give it a simplistic look at first, but once you walk through the copper-colored front door, you're greeted by a colorful entertaining area featuring cozy seats, a classy bar and eye-catching wallpaper. The bar, which was requested by the current owners, is decked out in gold, pink and blue shades, making it the perfect spot for James Bond to have a martini in the desert.
Designer Michael Ostrow said work on the house began in August, with construction taking off in October. Changes to the home included revamping the kitchen, fireplace, powder room and primary bathroom, as well as adding the bar.
While the house itself has a regency feel to it, the owners wanted to update its look, Ostrow said. As a result, "we went with more exotic or Bohemian fabric choices," he said, rather than a standard black and white color scheme or crisp lines.
That modern vibe can be seen in wallpapers used throughout the house that bring a splash of color and design to each space, as well as colorful curtains, rugs and other textiles.
Each of the bedrooms place emphasis on a different color palette. While one goes all in on blues and pinks, the primary bedroom is an orange oasis thanks to its wallpaper, accent chair, duvet cover and throw pillows. Another room is a pink palace with a feather motif wallpaper and matching bed frame, pillows and curtain.
One of the biggest design inspirations Ostrow worked with was the owners' personal movie poster collection. Almost every room in "Yoasis" features a vintage poster, including ones for "Arabesque" starring Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren, "Giant" starring Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean and "Barbarella" with Jane Fonda. Ostrow said the posters contributed to the house's feel, and often times the color that is found on a poster will inspire the ones used in a room. In the main seating area, the purple, blue and orange shades used in the "Barbarella" name can be seen in a light structure.
Several rooms lead out to a spacious backyard that features a pool and hot tub that make it the perfect spot for hosting a party and soaking up the sun. There are also plenty of seating options available, including two cabanas.
