Modesto ranks third nationwide for this thrift store category. See other survey results
Modesto’s thrift stores got middling marks overall in a national survey, but it placed third in the furniture category.
The survey was released Wednesday by LawnLove, which is mainly in the landscaping business. It does surveys on an oddball array of topics.
Modesto placed 109th among the 200 largest cities for thrift stores in general. The criteria include access to all types of stores, as well as the furniture, clothing and antique categories.
LawnLove did not provide details on Modesto’s used furniture sector, including names of stores.
New York City topped the overall rankings, followed by Los Angeles, Houston, San Diego and Chicago.
The survey was released on the eve of National Thrift Shop Day, which is Thursday, Aug. 17. The day promotes retailers of used goods everywhere, many of them raising money for nonprofits.
The larger operations in Stanislaus County include:
The Salvation Army, helping people with drug and alcohol addictions
Hope Chest, run by Community Hospice
Goodwill Industries, training people with barriers to employment
Habitat for Humanity ReStore, raising funds for home-building.
LawnLove used to be known as LawnStarter. It ranks locales on topics as diverse as dog walking, golfing and crafting. In February, Stanislaus County’s wineries scored high on value. A year earlier, the same thing happened with cheese.
Off Center Thrift & Gift in Turlock is among the smaller such outfits in the county, supporting numerous local nonprofits. It will celebrate Thursday with an open house from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 112 Bonita Ave. It will feature samples from two new businesses, Inland Roasters and Cheesey Keesey Charcuterie, and design consultations by Gina Trejo.
