Modesto, Turlock schools report COVID-19 cases over weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break

Modesto and Turlock school districts reported a combined 40 COVID-19 cases in the days leading up to their Thanksgiving breaks.

Countywide data was not available. The Health Services Agency is transitioning to a new statewide school outbreak reporting system that will “increase the completeness and timeliness of COVID-19 case reporting within schools,” according to a message on the dashboard Wednesday.

For Nov. 20-26, Modesto City Schools recorded 19 COVID-19 cases among students and four among staff. Schools were not in session over the second half of that week.

Turlock Unified School District most recently reported cases for Nov. 13-19. Students and staff were on Thanksgiving break Nov. 22-26.

The district reported that 15 students and two staff members had tested positive for COVID-19 the week before break, and 158 people were identified as close contacts.

School leaders from smaller districts have told The Bee they are not able to maintain a public COVID-19 data display because of limited staffing resources.

Several districts have created data displays since the school year began. Here are other K-12 school districts in Stanislaus County that The Bee knows to have COVID-19 dashboards:
