SINGAPORE — In a move to make it more accessible for children from lower-income households to attend the Ministry of Education (MOE) kindergartens, the income cap for priority admission has been raised from a gross monthly household income of $3,500 to $4,500.

The ministry said on Wednesday (18 January) that the change is expected to take place on 17 February, when the 2023 registration exercise begins.

Those children who are Singapore citizens living within one kilometre of the kindergartens, and whose monthly household income is at most $4,500 or $1,125 per person, will have the utmost priority for admission.

One-third of the spots go to these children, while the remaining places will subsequently be allotted to citizens and permanent residents with siblings who are attending kindergarten or primary school, followed by citizens in general, and then permanent residents in general.

Children entering Kindergarten 1 in 2024 will have the choice among 55 MOE kindergartens available for registration, an increase from 50 in 2022.

Singapore citizens attending MOE kindergartens in 2023 will pay $160 a month, while permanent residents pay $320 in fees.

MOE said that all its kindergartens will be holding their open-house events on either 11 or 18 February, and parents are encouraged to visit and learn more about the curriculum, programmes and facilities.

To encourage bilingualism, MOE kindergartens also offer Chinese, Malay and Tamil mother tongues and provide subsidised after-school care called Kindergarten Care.

Singaporeans and permanent residents born between 2 January 2019 and 1 January 2020 are eligible to register for the 2023 exercise. Parents can register their child on the MOE kindergarten website from 9am on 17 February to 4pm on 21 February.
