Moffitt, Moss and Russell inducted into East Muskingum Hall of Fame

East Muskingum Local Schools recently inducted Jeffrey Moffitt, James Moss and Stacey Elliott Russell into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Moffitt graduated from John Glenn High School in 1999, earned a bachelor's degree from College of Wooster in 2003 and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2009.

His research career began at the College of Wooster, where he co-created a science outreach program for the local elementary schools.

At the University of California, Berkeley, Moffitt developed a microscope capable of measuring atomic-scale movements and co-created a new microscopy technique that allows tens of thousands of different molecules to be imaged and identified within single cells within any tissue.

In 2018, he started a research laboratory at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital to discover new types of cells and map their organization in the human body, and to train the next generation of scientists. His dedication to research and teaching is a testament to his early education at John Glenn High School.

James Moss is a 1972 graduate of John Glenn High School and was honored for his expertise in business and legal issues within the outdoor recreation and adventure travel industry.

His clients range from guide services and recreation resorts to equipment manufacturers. His clients guide on Mt. Everest, the Grand Canyon, and mountains and rivers around the world.

Moss is the author or co-author of six books and is a contributing author to the Boy Scouts of America Boy Scout Fieldbook.

He serves as the US legal representative to the Union Internationale des Association d’Alpinisme Legal Committee and serves on 27 American Society of Testing and Materials committees.

He has been published in numerous publications and quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the Denver Post, and the Rocky Mountain News. He has made presentations to various outdoor associations and is the Editor of Recreation-Law.com, an online legal resource for the outdoor recreation industry.

Moss is also a founding member of the National Outdoor Book Awards, the Association of Sports Lawyers Group, and a member of the board of directors of the Denver Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is a recipient of two District Awards of Merit and the Silver Beaver for his volunteer work in Scouting, the President's Award for his work with the Sports and Recreation Law Association, and he serves on the editorial review board of Mountaineers Books and Falcon Publishing.

Stacey Elliott Russell
Stacey Elliott Russell

Russell is a 1988 graduate of John Glenn High School and a graduate of Marietta College. She is being honored for her commitment to the Muskingum County community through her work at the Muskingum County Library System.

Elliott has served the Muskingum County Library System for more than 25 years and is active at the state and national levels. She has served on both the Boards of the Ohio Government Finance Officers Association and the Ohio Library Council, in addition to serving on the Ethics Committee for the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. Elliott has lobbied at the Ohio Statehouse for Ohio libraries and 4-H.

Her volunteer work includes Muskingum County 4-H, United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan counties campaign committee, Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce, Muskingum Family YMCA past board member, Muskingum County Women of Achievement Steering Committee, and the Muskingum County Reverse Raffle Committee to benefit 4-H.
