Mohawk Valley Sports Notebook: Wrestlers win final home duals

Cornell University's Hunter Richard (Barneveld/Holland Patent) and the University at Buffalo's Derek Spann (Boonville/Adirondack) - two Division I wrestlers with high hopes of returning to the NCAA Championships - were winners in their final home matches of the season.

Richard, one of the seniors honored during Cornell's Senior Day, helped the nationally ranked Raiders beat Binghamton University 28-12 when he scored a 20-4 win by technical fall at 157 pounds.

Richard, the 24th-ranked 157-pounder in the country, is 10-6 this season and 60-28 in his career. All six of his losses are to wrestlers ranked in the Top 25 in the nation, including 8-4 and 4-2 decisions against Princeton and Penn opponents ranked No. 11 and No. 20, respectively.

Cornell, 12-2 overall and No. 11 in the Division I team rankings, is the Ivy League champion for the 18th time in the last 19 years, and the Big Red end their regular season with a dual meet at No. 8 Wisconsin.

At Buffalo, Spann helped the Bulls win a program-record sixth Mid-American Conference dual meet when UB rallied past Northern Illinois 17-15. In his final home dual meet, Spann was a 17-2 winner by technical fall at 133 pounds.

It was Spann's 51st dual win, tying the UB graduate student for second in program history. He is 15-6 this season and 80-32 in his career.

At South Dakota State University, 165-pound junior Tanner Cook (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) scored a first-period pin - his team-high 14th pin of the season - and the 25th-ranked Jackrabbits beat Northern Colorado 29-9. Cook, now 17-9 after a 7-1 win against Little Rock, is ranked No. 33 in the nation at 165 pounds.

Le Moyne track star Kozyra honored

Le Moyne College's Madison Kozyra (Marcy/Whitesboro), a red-shirt freshman on the women's indoor track and field team, was named the Northeast-10 Conference Field Rookie of the Week for the fourth consecutive week after placing fourth in the shot put (37 feet-10 3/4 inches) and seventh in the weight throw (43-8 1/2) at Utica College's Blue & Orange Invitational.

The previous week, Kozyra won the shot put (36-11 3/4) at the Houghton College Invitational, and her second-place weight throw of 44 feet set a Le Moyne College record.

At Utica College's Pioneer Invitational, Utica's Jane Fahy (Oriskany) won the women's shot put at 41-8 1/2 and Mohawk Valley Community College's Andy Hadasz (Whitesboro) won the men's 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 22.57 seconds.

At Ithaca College's Bomber Invitational, the University of Rochester's Ryan Swavely (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was runner-up in the weight throw at 52 feet, six inches.

Bard scores fourth goal for Colgate

Junior defender Sydney Bard (New Hartford) scored an early first-period goal and assisted on another score to help the nationally-ranked No. 8 Colgate University women's ice hockey team blank RPI 3-0. It was the fourth goal of the season for Bard, who also has 21 assists and is fourth on the team in scoring.

Bard and the Raiders made it three straight wins Tuesday night when they avenged an earlier loss with a 3-2 victory over Cornell University. Colgate improved to 24-7-1 overall.

Brockport's Bushey ranked nationally

Sophomore Taylor Bushey (Marcy/Whitesboro) has helped her Brockport State women's gymnastics team - the NCAA Division III leader in every event - get off to an 8-0 start in dual meets.

The Golden Eagles lead the nation with an all-around average score of 191.3313, and Bushey ranks third nationally in the uneven bars at 9.6813. Brockport's 8-0 record includes a 192.425-191.60 win over Division I Cornell University.

Policelli helps Stony Brook basketball

Stony Brook University's Frankie Policelli (New Hartford) scored 15 points in an 87-85 win over UMass-Lowell and then recorded season highs of 10 rebounds and five assists to help his Division I men's basketball team beat the University of Maine 85-74.

Norfolk State University's Jalen Hawkins (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) scored 16 points and matched his season high with nine rebounds as the Spartans (17-5) beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 70-63, and Binghamton University's Tyler Bertram (Cooperstown) shot 5 of 7 from 3-point range and scored a team-high 21 points in a 68-67 loss to the University at Albany.

In Division III men's basketball, Lyndon State's Luke Fredsell (Whitesboro/Westmoreland) scored 25 points in a 102-96 overtime loss to UMaine-Presque Isle, St. Lawrence University's Trent Adamson (Ilion/Thomas R. Proctor) had 15 points and 11 rebounds in an 80-79 win over Ithaca College, and Geneseo State's Terry Nichols (New York Mills) scored 13 points in a 65-62 win over Plattsburgh State.
