Molded food in cooler and mouse droppings. Worst Myrtle Beach area restaurant inspections

One Grand Strand restaurant was reported to have mold in its cooler, as well as molded food items, while another had mouse droppings, according to recent restaurant inspections.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control does health inspections for restaurants within Horry County and the surrounding area, with data current as of Feb. 07, 2024.

These were the worst restaurant inspections in the Myrtle Beach area.

China Town

Location: 2608 Main Street #G, Conway

Score: 79 percent

S.C. DHEC inspected the Conway restaurant Jan. 29, 2024 and found multiple violations.

An employee did not wash their hands after handling raw chicken before they began cooking, according to the inspection report.

Soups were at the incorrect holding temperatures, which the inspection noted was corrected.

The S.C. DHEC inspection also reported that China Town did not have a discard time for products such as sweet and sour chicken that required one. S.C DHEC also noted China Town corrected the violation.

The chicken was improperly thawing in a prep sink; a cell phone was on a prep table; and egg rolls and ribs were stored in a residential refrigerator, which isn’t permitted and is a consecutive violation for China Town, according to the report.

China Town’s most consistent violation was an accumulation of grease and grime. The reported noted grime on a wok table, the sides of fryers, cracks between equipment, shelves, walk-in freezer, and behind or under all equipment and the residential refrigerator.

China Town is required to have a follow-up inspection in 10 days before Feb. 8, 2024, according to S.C. DHEC’s inspection. The report concluded that a failure to address violations will result in a downgrading for China Town.

Fudi Mart

Location: 901 Highway 17 North, Surfside Beach

Grade: 80 percent

S.C. DHEC inspected Fudi Mart Jan. 31, 2024, and found several violations.

There was mold in a walk-in cooler and molding food containers in the same cooler, according to the report. The inspection reported that both instances of mold were corrected.

There was no probe thermometer at the restaurant to test food temperature, and no sanitizer testing devices were at the eatery, according to the inspection.

There were other violations, too. The hand sink for employees had supplies in it close to the boba tea area and food was not stored at the proper temperatures, although these issues were also addressed according to the report.

The inspection found ready-to-eat food held for longer than 24 hours, a consecutive violation; bottles of chemical spray stored improperly close to food-making materials; a bottle of pesticide was next to where boba tea was made; and other violations, although all were corrected during the inspection according to the S.C. DHEC report.

The inspection noted that Fudi Mart must have a follow-up inspection within 10 days. The restaurant could be downgraded if Fudi Mart cannot address its violations.

Wendy’s #213

Location: 2625 Dick Pond Road

Grade: 81 percent

S.C. DHEC inspected the Wendy’s site Jan. 29, 2024, finding several violations.

Food pans had soiled surfaces, despite being designated as clean, the report noted.

A bottle of chemical spray sat next to the coffee maker, and the standing freezer and fans in the walk-in cooler had a build-up, while the make-top cooler refrigerator had soiled surfaces, according to S.C DHEC’s report.

The inspection also wrote that the violation was corrected. Chicken nuggets were not held at the correct holding temperatures, a priority violation that was fixed according to the report.

Cheese was also not held at the correct temperature, which was fixed that day the report noted, and other violations were also discovered by DHEC’s report.

The inspection noted that Wendy’s #213 is required to have a follow-up inspection within 10 days. The restaurant could be downgraded if the Wendy’s location cannot address its violations.

Country Corner #7

Location: 410 E Brooks Road, Andrews

Score: 83 percent

S.C. DHEC has repeatedly found violations at Country Corner #7 in Andrews, and the department found more when it inspected the eatery Feb. 2, 2024.

The inspection found mice droppings, including on a shelf of a prep table and the floor throughout the eatery. The inspection reported this issue had not been corrected.

Ready-to-eat foods, specifically smoked sausage and corned beef hash, had no expiration date, although S.C. DHEC’s report noted the violation was remedied during the inspection.

S.C. DHEC also found contact paper covering shelves throughout the restaurant, a violation, and grease and grime build-up in the kitchen, on ceiling tiles, and the fryers. The inspection also found debris build-up on a shelf below a prep table.

Country Corner #7’s C grade will stand, according to the S.C. DHEC report, for not correcting violations. The report also noted a 10-day, onsite follow up is required.
