Mom and daughter opened a Johnson County coffee shop. Now they expand into Missouri

Mother-daughter pair Shelly and Kiersten Graham brought Summer Moon Coffee to 9127 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park in 2021, opening one of the first locations outside of the chain’s home state of Texas.

Now they’re bringing Summer Moon to Missouri. Their second cafe opened in Lee’s Summit over the weekend, at 699 N.W. Blue Parkway.

Smoothies, teas and locally sourced pastries (from Scratch Bakery, Hana’s Donuts and NiceBites, a vegan bakery in Wichita) are available, but the big draw is the Moon Milk, a sweet cream added to the coffees.

“It’s made with seven secret ingredients,” Kiersten said. “The first time I had a Half Moon latte, in Dallas, I took one sip and called my mom and said, ‘We have to open a location.’”

Customers decide how sweet they want their coffee: a Summer Moon (four shots of espresso and Moon Milk), a Half Moon (espresso with equal parts skim milk and Moon Milk) or a Whisper Moon (espresso, lots of skim milk, little bit of Moon Milk).

“The Blue Moon, which has lavender in it, is really popular,” Kiersten said. “And starting August 18 we’ll be serving the Autumn Moon, which is kind of like our take on pumpkin spice.”

The coffee comes from Summer Moon’s facilities in Austin.

“They roast it over Texas oak, which gives it a nice, unique, smooth taste,” Shelly said.

The Lee’s Summit location has a drive-thru. Hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends.

Summer Moon Coffee now has more than 50 locations across the U.S., including in Florida, Arkansas and Colorado.
