Mom of North Texas freshman says teacher pulled her son’s dreadlocks out when removing hat

The mother of a student at North Crowley Ninth Grade Campus says a teacher pulled out two of her son’s dreadlocks while trying to take off his hat. Now, she’s seeking an apology from the teacher and answers from the school district.

Jessica Scroggins, the mother of Crowley Independent School District freshman Bremon Scroggins, said an altercation erupted between her son and a teacher after he was instructed to take off his beanie, according to a Facebook post by the mother. When Bremon Scroggins didn’t immediately comply with the teacher’s request, the teacher took off the beanie himself but pulled Scroggins’ hair out in the process, leaving a bald spot in the middle of his head, his mother alleges.

“I want this man to be arrested. He need(s) to be removed from North Crowley,” Jessica Scroggins said in the Nov. 14 Facebook post. “I’m still waiting on answers. As a mother I deserve answers. My son deserve(s) an apology. ”

The Nov. 9 incident was first reported by KXAS-TV. On Facebook, Jessica Scroggins said she has filed a police report, but it’s unclear if it was with the city police department or district’s police department. She also has contacted the NAACP, and has obtained an attorney, she said.

She was unavailable for further comment as of Friday afternoon.

Crowley ISD officials said in a statement that the teacher is on administrative leave as they investigate the incident involving “the removal of a student’s hat.”
