Mom stabs and kills 8-year-old son, Alabama cops say. He is remembered for his ‘joy’

A woman is in custody after being accused of fatally stabbing her 8-year-old son, Alabama deputies said.

Jennifer Nicole Long, 41, was arrested and charged with capital murder on March 16, according to a series of Facebook posts from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were first called to a home outside Hartselle, at 5:30 a.m. after reports of a stabbing.

They found a man and a boy who had both been stabbed, deputies said.

The man was airlifted to a hospital, but deputies did not release additional information about his condition.

The boy, Long’s 8-year-old son, died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Long was taken into custody and deputies said more charges are expected in the coming days.

Deputies did not release a motive for the stabbing.

The Morgan County Schools Superintendent Tracie Turrentine shared a statement with deputies and said that the 8-year-old was a student in the district.

“It is with great sadness that we have lost one of our students in Morgan County,” Turrentine said. “The student will be remembered for the joy he brought to his friends, classmates and teachers.”

Turrentine said “support services are available to those who need them.”

“My condolences and thoughts go out to the family at this time. The loss of a student can be a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress in students,” Turrentine said.

Hartselle is 70 miles north of Birmingham.
