The 33rd annual Mother’s Day Mariachi Festival is returning to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Saturday after a three-year hiatus.

The event will feature internationally known bands Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández, Mariachi Estrella de México and Mariachi Los Reyes.

Although the festival will showcase some top mariachi musicians, organizer Robert Garcia Jr. said the purpose of the concert is to honor mothers.

“It’s all about moms,” Garcia. “She’s the focus.”

The festival, the first since the pandemic, will start at 10:30 a.m. with a pre-concert social in the courtyard of the Oxnard center at 800 Hobson Way.

Local restaurants and vendors will sell food, drinks and gifts. Alcoholic drinks will also be for sale. Meanwhile, local band Instone will perform a variety of music.

At 2 p.m., the festival will begin in earnest with Los Angeles-based Mariachi Los Reyes.

Mariachi Estrella de México is next in the lineup. The group originates from Jalisco, Mexico, the birthplace of mariachi music, Garcia said.

Headliner Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández will wrap up. The group has performed on some of the biggest stages throughout the world and its leader, Hernández, is one of the genre's top performers, Garcia said.

He noted Saturday’s lineup could perform anywhere in the world, but “they’re coming out to our backyard.”

Tickets, which range from $40-$70, can be bought at wheremusicmeetsthesoul.com.
