California Gov. Gavin Newsom unsuccessfully pressed President Donald Trump on Monday to acknowledge that climate change is making wildfires worse across much of the West Coast. “We obviously feel very strongly that the hots are getting hotter, that the drys are getting drier,” Newsom told Trump at a roundtable in Sacramento, Calif., where the president stopped for two hours on a fundraising trip for his reelection campaign.
During a brief press conference on Sunday evening, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) announced that state Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg (R) was involved in a fatal car accident on Saturday night. The crash took place west of Highmore, in central South Dakota, and Noem said law enforcement is "working on identifying the deceased and notifying the family." The accident occurred as Ravnsborg was driving home from a dinner hosted by the state GOP.
Marine authorities were puzzling on Monday over how to persuade at least one wayward humpback whale to leave a murky, crocodile-infested river in northern Australia and continue an annual migration to Antarctica. There have been no previous recorded sightings of whales in East Alligator River in the Northern Territory's World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, and no one can explain why at least three of the blue water mammals ventured so deep inland in a river with little visibility. Marine ecologist Jason Fowler said he spotted three whales on Sept. 2 while sailing with friends more than 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the river's mouth.
Bernie Sanders on Sunday denied any big concerns with Joe Biden's presidential campaign, in contrast to a recently published article in the Washington Post. Appearing on Ali Velshi's morning MSNBC show, Sanders said Biden "is in an excellent position to win" but can't simply campaign against Trump. Sanders, a 2016 and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has publicly encouraged Biden to reach out to Latinos and younger voters.
A court in Vietnam has sentenced two brothers to death for their role in the killing of three policemen in a notorious land dispute in January. Le Dinh Cong and his younger brother Le Dinh Chuc helped mastermind resistance against the police, the court ruled. A woman traveling from Fort Myers, Florida, to Chicago said she was escorted off her Southwest Airline flight on Saturday because her 2-year-old son was snacking prior to takeoff and wasn't wearing his mask. Jodi Degyansky, 34, wants airlines to have more compassion for parents who have toddlers that might have difficulty donning their masks for a long time. Degyansky said she flew to Florida to visit her family in Naples.
President Donald Trump condoned the killing of a man under investigation in connection to the murder of a right-wing activist in Portland, Oregon. Trump praised US Marshals for "taking care of" Michael Forest Reinoehl "in 15 minutes," referring officers shooting and killing Reinoehl as they went in to arrest him earlier this month. "The US Marshals killed him and I will tell you something, that's the way it has to be," Trump said, referring to Reinoehl.
It's the first time that Gillum has addressed his sexuality since March, when he was found with two men in a Miami Beach hotel room by police called to a suspected overdose. The bombshell emerged from the politician's first major interview since March, when Gillum announced he would voluntarily enter a rehab facility two days after the hotel incident. According to the Miami Beach Police Department report obtained by The Daily Beast, two officers responded to reports of cardiac distress at a Mondrian South Beach hotel room at around 1 a.m. on March 13, when they found Miami Beach Fire-Rescue already on the scene and treating Travis Dyson, 30, for a “possible drug overdose.”
A big chunk of ice has broken away from the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf - 79N, or Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden - in north-east Greenland. The loss is further evidence say scientists of the rapid climate changes taking place in Greenland. Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden is roughly 80km long by 20km wide and is the floating front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream - where it flows off the land into the ocean to become buoyant.
An Israeli court on Monday handed down three life sentences to a Jewish extremist convicted in a 2015 arson attack that killed a Palestinian toddler and his parents. The 2015 arson attack came amid a wave of vigilante attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank by suspected Jewish extremists.
Parents in Williamson County, Tennessee are suing their local school district and superintendent over a district mask mandate, The Tennessean reported. In Williamson County, roughly 30 minutes south of Nashville, a group of parents filed a lawsuit on Friday that claimed the school district is denying "substantially equal education opportunities available to other students in the state" according to the complaint reported in The Tennessean. The complaint asks for a declaration that the district's mandate is "beyond the authority granted to local school boards," noting that a "significant number of school systems within the State does not have a mask mandate in effect."
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has resumed deportation arrests after halting briefly at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. It was announced in March that ICE and the Trump administration would be temporarily halting enforcement across the United States except efforts to deport foreign nationals who've committed serious crimes or pose a threat to public safety. “During the COVID-19 crisis, ICE will not carry out enforcement operations at or near health care facilities, such as hospitals, doctors' offices, accredited health clinics, and emergent or urgent care facilities, except in the most extraordinary of circumstances,” the notification added.
Lewis says that while many non-Black Muslims would likely embrace Blake Sr. s decision to recite the Qur'an, many would also continue to perpetuate anti-Blackness in their own lives and communities—everything from non-Black Muslims not returning greetings, to assuming ignorance about Islam, to not considering Black Muslims worthy of marrying their non-Black children. The Black Lives Matter Movement is forcing the Muslim community to reckon with its own anti-Blackness and scrutinize its already tense relationship with law enforcement.

The school also ranked No. 54 in the nation for liberal arts colleges, according to results released Sunday.
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump opened a three-day campaign swing through the West on Saturday by claiming Democrats are trying to steal the upcoming election and warning that Joe Biden is incapable of leading the country. Discounting polls that show him running behind, Trump predicted at a campaign rally in Nevada that he would win a second term, but he told supporters that Democrats are trying to "rig" the election. "It's a rigged election – that's the only way we're going to lose," he said, without offering any evidence, during the rally at Minden-Tahoe Airport, about an hour south of Reno.
Legal advocates are lining up on both sides of actor Bill Cosby's appeal as the Pennsylvania Supreme Court prepares to review his 2018 sex assault conviction. Cosby was the first celebrity to go on trial in the #MeToo era, and his appeal could resolve lingering questions about how the cases should be tried. For starters, the high court will try to clarify when other accusers can testify against a defendant — and when the additional testimony amounts to character assassination.

Europe has "lost" the global battle in cloud computing but should nevertheless resume the fight, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday. "If we want our ecosystem to be sustainable, it has to be sovereign," Macron said during a conference, reiterating that Europe should not rely "on any non-European power" for data security and 5G. U.S. giants Amazon, Microsoft and Google dominate the worldwide cloud computing business, with a combined market share of around 60%.
Progressives hoping for a Democratic White House and Senate next year are already voicing worries that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who would be next in line to lead the Judiciary Committee, will not commit to pushing a future Biden administration's judicial nominees with the same aggressive tactics used by Republicans under President Trump. As Judiciary Committee chairman, Feinstein, 87, would wield significant political power if Democrats take control of the Senate.

The historic negotiations kicked off over the weekend in Qatar, a Middle East nation where the Taliban have maintained a political office for the past several years. The start of negotiations was the latest in a flurry of diplomatic accomplishments by the Trump administration ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November.
