Breylin Bergious, Rocky River baseball: home run, four RBIs in a 13-3 win over Garinger.

Nate Brittain, Stuart Cramer baseball: threw a no-hitter and struck out 15 in a 1-0 win over Kings Mountain. He also drove in the game-winning run.

Grant Gardner, Charlotte Country Day baseball: allowed four hits and struck out seven in a 4-1 win over Charlotte Latin.

Thomas Paxton, Cuthbertson baseball: hit seventh home run of the season and scored four times in a 14-3 win over Piedmont.

Lindsey Refsnider, Mallard Creek softball: two triples, home run, six RBIs in a 19-0 win over West Mecklenburg.

Providence Day soccer closes in on title

Providence Day took a big step toward capturing the CISAA girls’ soccer championship Tuesday, blanking host Charlotte Latin 2-0.

The Chargers, now 6-0 in conference play, got goals from Reilly Brinley and Devin McElroy. Goalkeeper Chandler Brooks made six saves for the shutout.

Charlotte Latin fell to 4-2 in CISAA play. The Hawks lost 2-1 at Providence Day earlier this month.

Each team has four conference matches remaining.

Baseball

QUEEN CITY 3A-4A

Hopewell 11, Hough 7: Down 7-6, Hopewell rallied with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on. The teams are tied for first place with 11-1 records and close out the regular season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Hough.

North Mecklenburg 15, West Charlotte 5: North Mecklenburg’s Drew Rhoden slammed two doubles and scored twice.

SO MECK 4A

Ardrey Kell 16, Berry Academy 0 (Game 1): Nicholas Nunez-Ruiz fired a shutout.

Ardrey Kell 15, Berry Academy 0 (Game 2): Eric West’s shutout gave the Knights an 11-1 conference record and the regular-season title.

Myers Park 7, Olympic 1: The Mustangs (9-2) took over second place and knocked Olympic (8-3) into third.

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Butler 15, Independence 5: Butler scored in five of its six at-bats. The Bulldogs can captured the regular-season title by winning Wednesday at Independence.

Providence 13, East Mecklenburg 1: The red-hot Panthers improved to 9-2 in the conference and remained a game behind Butler with one to go.

Rocky River 13, Garinger 3: Rocky River’s Breylin Bergious homered and drove in four runs.

CISAA

Charlotte Country Day 4, Charlotte Latin 1: Winning pitcher Grant Gardner scattered four hits and struck out seven. Losing pitcher Andrew Kreisz allowed only one hit.

Covenant Day 12, Cannon School 4: Will Boyce led the victors with two hits and three RBI.

Providence Day 6, Charlotte Christian 5: Winning pitcher Bo Ziegler and Anderson Shirey each drove in two runs. D.J. Layton homered for Charlotte Christian.

A.L. Brown 9, Cox Mill 5: Cox Mill’s Jackson Caldwell homered.

Hickory Ridge 5, West Cabarrus 1: The Bulls spoiled Senior Night at West Cabarrus and clinched the regular-season conference title.

Mooresville 5, Lake Norman 0: Mooresville’s Noah Hildebran worked 6.2 innings, allowing four hits. Breyson Eichaker came in and got the last out.

SOUTHERN CAROLINA 4A

Cuthbertson 14, Piedmont 3: Thomas Paxton’s seventh home run of the season lifted the Cavaliers. Paxton scored four times.

Porter Ridge 11, Sun Valley 5

Weddington 4, Marvin Ridge 2: Seth Clark got the victory for the Warriors, and Maverik Schrock earned the save. Weddington (10-4) clinched the regular-season conference championship.

North Mecklenburg 33, Hopewell 16: This wild slugfest went to the Vikings, whose Kenzie Ingram drove in six runs with a triple and a home run.

SO MECK 4A

Ardrey Kell 16, Olympic 0 (Game 1): Maddie Christensen tripled, homered, and drove in three runs.

Ardrey Kell 20, Olympic 0 (Game 2): The third-place Knights improved to 8-3, as Kathryn Blau smacked two triples and drove in three runs.

Myers Park 1, South Mecklenburg 0: Grace Lloyd’s double drove in the game’s only run, and winning pitcher Hannah Hubbard tossed a one-hitter. She struck out 15. The victory left Myers Park (10-1) in first place and dropped the Sabres (8-2) to second. Myers Park finishes the regular season Thursday at Olympic (2-8).

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Charlotte Catholic 7, East Mecklenburg 1: Rachel Wildman tossed a one-hitter, and Annabelle Grogan doubled and homered, driving in four runs.

Charlotte Christian 10, Cannon School 4: Kaylin Garlick homered, and Hailey Conde had three hits, as the Knights forced a tie with Cannon for first place. Each team is 6-2. Cannon School’s Kenzie Sturgill had two doubles and three RBI.

Covenant Day 4, Charlotte Country Day 3: Covenant Day’s Avery Houseton slugged a double and triple and drove in two runs.

Providence Day 9, Charlotte Latin 4 (9 innings): This game was tied 2-2 after the regulation seven innings. The Chargers’ Elle Sigg scored twice and had two hits.

GREATER METRO 4 4A

Hickory Ridge 8, Cox Mill 3: The powerhouse Ragin’ Bulls wrapped up the regular-season crown and improved to 11-0 in league play. Grace Bechtol led the way with three hits.

Marvin Ridge 19, Piedmont 18: Marvin Ridge had allowed its first 18 opponents an average of 3.4 runs per game. Tuesday was a different story, as Piedmont’s Addi Lockrum drove in four runs. But the Mavericks improved to 9-0 and are conference regular-season champs.

Sun Valley 7, Cuthbertson 6: Sun Valley’s Jordan Vaughn had two doubles, while Cuthbertson’s Gracie Murray slammed a pair of home runs.

Charlotte Country Day 7, Covenant Day 2: Covenant Day’s Hamilton Huitt won No. 1 singles, but the Buccaneers’ Aaryon Chopra and Benjamin Farnham won in both singles and doubles.

Providence Day 7, Charlotte Latin 2: The Chargers improved to 12-0 on the season, as Shaurya Bharadwaj (No. 1 singles) and Reno Kramin (No. 2) won in straight sets. In the closest match, Charlotte Latin’s Hayden Willett won in No. 6 singles, by a 6-3, 7-5 score over Valentin Streitberger.

Football

Hough junior tackle Eagan Boyer announced via social media Tuesday that he is committing to Penn State. Boyer, 6-8 and 265 pounds, had been recruited actively by a number of major FBS schools, including North Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee and Michigan.

Andie Evans drove in two runs for Cannon. Cate Darling doubled and drove in two runs for the Knights. The two teams play again at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cannon School.

Butler 12, Mallard Creek 1: Ashlynne Forrest tossed a three-hitter, earning the victory. Butler’s Sophia Levesque tripled and homered, and Sydney Reynolds drove in three runs.

Draughn 16, Lincolnton 8: Lincolnton’s Bailey Hollar had two hits and two RBI.

Hickory Grove Christian 2, Piedmont Community Charter 1: Cameron Fisher got the better of this pitchers’ duel, tossing a five-hitter and striking out 15. Piedmont’s Ashton Kenna also threw a five-hitter.

Hickory Ridge 9, Mount Pleasant 1: Chloe Woodward and Kristyn Embler homered for the Bulls, who can clinch the Greater Metro 4 4A regular-season title with a victory Tuesday evening at Cox Mill.

Mountain Island Charter 4, Christ the King 1: The Raptors stunned the Crusaders, outscoring them 3-0 in the second half. Jaida McGrew had two goals and two assists. It was the first conference loss this season for Christ the King (6-1-1).

Pine Lake Prep 3, Community School of Davidson 0: Maddison Harris got the shutout in goal, as the Pride (6-1) moved into first place. Gracie Hughes scored twice and had an assist. The Spartans fell to 5-2-1, in third place.

Basketball

Alexander Central High has stayed in-house for a new boys’ basketball coach. Cam Gant, a former Cougar player and assistant coach the past eight seasons, will become head coach. He replaces Ed Wills, who is resigning after 19 seasons at the helm.

Gant is a 2012 Alexander Central graduate. He was boys’ junior varsity coach the past eight seasons and also has been an assistant coach at the school with the football and the track and field teams.
