BOYS BASKETBALL

BUCHTEL 75, McKINLEY 58: Senior Marcel Boyce Jr. scored 31 points, earned a game MVP award and led Buchtel to victory in the Canton Play-By-Play Classic at Memorial Civic Center. Seniors Khoi Thurmon and Amire Robinson added 18 and 11 points, respectively, for the Griffins. Senior Jahlil Graham scored a team-high 26 points for McKinley.

WRESTLING

PAC-7 TOURNAMENT

Canton South crowned two champions and won the team title at its first PAC-7 Tournament.

Tyler Pugh of the Wildcats won the 157-pound championship by pin in 48 seconds. Matt Guizar earned the 285 title by decision.

South finished 33 points ahead of runner-up CVCA.

MASSILLON 92, FIRESTONE 88 Elijah Farrington scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Massillon to a win over visiting Firestone. Chris Knight added 19 points for the Tigers. Jalen Slaughter also had 13 points for Massillon.

MALVERN 81, LISBON DAVID ANDERSON 47 Rodney Smith had 25 points to help Malvern wrap up a 21-1 regular season with a win on the road. J'Allen Barrino also scored 15 points for Malvern. Mitch Minor chipped in 11 points for the Hornets.

PERRY 44, EASTLAKE NORTH 37 Marlee Pireu totaled 14 points and seven rebounds as the No. 20 seed Panthers went on the road Thursday and knocked off No. 15 Eastlake North in a Division I Northeast 3 sectional final. Maddie Knop and Macy Takacs added nine points and eight rebounds apiece for Perry (11-13), which advances to a district semifinal for the first time since 2017. Perry will face No. 1 overall seed Solon in the first game of a Tuesday night district semifinal doubleheader at Ravenna. Perry meets Solon at 6 p.m., followed by Jackson vs. the Louisville-Hudson winner at 8 p.m. Perry lost to Solon last year in a sectional final. Kailey Minch led Eastlake North with 19 points.

PAINESVILLE RIVERSIDE 43, NORTH CANTON HOOVER 40 A long 3-pointer by Hoover in the final seconds was off as the Vikings' upset bid fell just short in this Division I Northeast 1 sectional final. No. 19 Hoover won at No. 18 Mentor on Monday, but the Vikings (8-16) could not make the long drive to Lake County a successful one again against No. 9 Riverside. No other details were available.

NORTHWEST 52, EAST CLE. SHAW 4 The only drama in Northwest's Division II sectional tournament opener was whether or not Lily Bottomley would make history. She cleared the final hurdle Wednesday with a couple of points to spare. Bottomley scored 23 and became Northwest's career leader in a decisive win over East Cleveland Shaw. The Loyola of Maryland recruit entered the night 21 points away from the record Erin Eckroad held for 20 years. Bottomley now has 1,314 points. She ranks second behind Joe Concheck at Northwest in career scoring for boys and girls.

Monday's high school basketball highlights

GIRLS

HOOVER 35, MENTOR 30 Lily Cain's 3-pointer with 1:41 left broke a 30-30 tie and sparked the Vikings to a road win in this Division I Northeast 1 sectional semifinal. Cain hit five 3s for her game-high 15 points, leading 19th-seeded Hoover over No. 18 Mentor. Grace Craig and Lauren Rose added eight points each for Hoover (8-15), with Rose hitting a pair of free throws to tie the game earlier in the quarter. Christine Katava's 10 points led Mentor, which was held scoreless over the final 5:55 of the game. The Vikings advance to play at No. 9 Painesville Riverside on Thursday.

JOHN GLENN 47, MINERVA 13 John Glenn ended Minerva's season in an East Division II sectional opener. No details were available.

PERRY 61, MARIETTA 47 Zander Sabin scored 16 points to lead Perry to a regular season win over Marietta. Joel Brown finished with 14 points and Luke Wolf added 11 for the Panthers (6-15), who won their fourth straight. The four-game winning streak comes on the heels of a 10-game losing streak.
