Monday’s rewind: Isaiah Evans, North Meck scare reigning national champion Link Academy
North Mecklenburg battled back — but not all the way back — and dropped a 67-59 decision Monday evening to defending national champion Link Academy in the opening round of the Isle of Palms Classic tournament in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Vikings suffered their first loss in nine games this season against a team loaded with Division 1 recruits.
One of those recruits, Texas commit Tre Johnson, scored eight of his team’s final 12 points and finished with a game-high 26 points. Johnson is ranked No. 5 nationally in the class of 2024.
North Mecklenburg got off to a fast start, building a 9-0 lead.
But Link Academy (11-2), a Branson, Mo.-based team that won the mythical national title last spring in the GEICO National Championship, battled back. Junior Jasper Johnson, who has college offers from more than a dozen Power 5 schools, scored 11 points in one stretch, and his team built a 35-26 halftime lead over the Vikings.
Link Academy’s lead grew to 41-26 before North Mecklenburg launched its comeback.
A steal and layup by Ashton Pierce cut Link Academy’s lead to 47-45 as the third quarter ended.
Link Academy rallied, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the opening 30 seconds of the fourth quarter for a 53-45 lead.
The Vikings got as close as 59-54 on a Carson Evans 3-pointer with 2:34 left to play.
But Johnson made free throws and baskets down the stretch, and North Mecklenburg never got within five points again.
Duke commit Isaiah Evans scored 20 points and added six rebounds and three blocks for the Vikings. Trey Maxwell added 13 points, and Pierce had 12 points and four assists.
North Mecklenburg doesn’t play again until 1:45 p.m. Thursday, when the Vikings face the loser of a Tuesday game between IMG Academy and Richmond Heights (Ohio).
Cannon School falls
Florida-based Montverde Academy (11-1) had no problems with Cannon School (11-4), jumping to a 31-19 first-quarter lead and expanding that to 63-33 at halftime.
The Eagles led 94-43 after three quarters and played substitutes for much of the second and fourth quarters.
Flagg led the victors with 22 points, and Derik Queen, who has not made a college commitment, added 19. Austin Swartz scored 18 for Cannon School.
The Cougars will play against at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, facing the loser of a Tuesday game between Columbus (FL) and Archbishop Ryan (PA).
