Akron-area OHSAA girls, boys basketball, wrestling results Feb. 27-March 4

Here's a look back Akron-area high school basketball and wrestling results from the Week of Feb. 27-March 4. Girls basketball teams were in regionals, while boys basketball and wrestling competed at the district level.

Saturday's results: Walsh Jesuit among boys basketball district champs

Junior reserve Ruel Tomlinson Jr. scored 12 points Saturday to lead Walsh Jesuit to a 49-43 win over Lyndhurst Brush in a Division I boys basketball district championship at Euclid High School.

“We always ask Ruel to come in and make a positive impact on the game and today he really did,” WJ coach Kevin Byrne said. “... He rebounds the ball well, he guards well and he hit two big 3’s today. He is really giving us quality minutes. He is almost like another starter coming off the bench.”

Walsh will meet Stow in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kent State University. Stow beat Walsh in the regular season. The two teams also met last year with Walsh winning in the regular season and Stow earning a sectional tournament victory

Walsh (19-7) topped Brush (13-12) with balanced scoring as senior Zach Halligan (nine points), senior Keith Rivers (eight points), senior Max Matta (seven points) and junior Sean Spicer (six points) also played key roles.

“It was an ensemble cast today and even the other night against Louisville [in a district semifinal],” said Byrne, a 1992 WJ graduate. “Our bench played great in the first half and got us lead. We kind of gave it back and then managed to hang on. The strengh of the team is the team. We got really good games out of different guys that have been able to help us win.”

Senior Marlon Barnes Jr., a Pittsburgh recruit, paced Brush with 14 points and junior Kaleb Burge scored 11 points.

Walsh led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter, 29-22 at halftime and 38-32 through three quarters.

Byrne said Walsh won its first district title in boys basketball since 2011 when the Warriors were in Division II. Saturday’s triumph is the first Division I district title for the program since 1996.

"This is our third district final in my five years as coach," said Byrne, who has a 90-33 record.

"... The moments like these, this is why you do it. It is unbelievable. They are long seasons and we work so hard. Like I tell the guys all the time, we make a big deal about winning our league [Crown Conference] championship. To get over the hump and win a district championship and get to cut down the nets is a good feeling. The guys have worked hard for this. We have aspired to do it the last couple of years and have come up just a little short. To be able to get over the hump is a special moment."
