Monday's high school scores: Durfee baseball completes rare triple play in league win

FALL RIVER — The Durfee baseball team is heating up.

The Hilltoppers captured their fourth straight win on Monday and turned a rare triple play in the field as Durfee toppled league opponent New Bedford, 12-4, at B.M.C. Durfee High School.

Josh Martel got the win on the hill for the Hilltoppers (9-6), scattering eight hits and three earned runs while striking out four. He also had a hit, scored a run and collected a pair of RBI at the plate.

Ryan Lopes finished with two doubles, scored three times and drove in two runs. Alexis Montilla and Sebastien Reis each finished with two hits, scored a run and drove in two runs in the victory.

The Whalers loaded the bases in the fourth inning. Montilla tracked down a ball heading for the gap in right-center and threw to second for the second out. The runner, who was at first, was caught leaning toward second base for the third out.

The win is Durfee's fifth win in six games.

The Hilltoppers host Bridgewater-Raynham on Wednesday.

Somerset Berkley 3, Apponequet 2

The Raiders won a big league matchup with Apponequet.

Benjamin Oliveira earned the victory on the hill for SBR (10-5; 7-3 in South Coast Conference). He allowed six hits and two runs while striking out seven. Cole Taylor threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last nine outs (five on strikeouts) to earn the save.

Landon Richardson had three hits and scored a pair of runs. Owen Derocher finished with two hits and an RBI.

The Raiders host Dartmouth on Wednesday.

Atlantis Charter 10, Sturgis West 0

The Tritons blanked Sturgis West at home.

Troy Senez had a triple and a single in the win for ACH (5-7). Tom Berek had two hits while Ethan Frias finished with a single and triple. Jared Brown pitched four shutout innings on the hill.

The Tritons host Joseph Case on Tuesday.

Bishop Stang 2, St Mary’s 1

The Spartans edged St. Mary's in the opening rounds of the CCL Cup to improve to 11-3, 9-2 in CCL). Aiden Cardoza got the win on the hill for Stang.

Seamus Marshall drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Both Justin Gouveia (RBI) and Cam Letourneau (run scored) collected a triple in the victory. Alex DiGiammo (run scored) and Brayden Bennett each finished with a hit.

The Spartans play Austin Prep in the championship game on Wednesday.

Westport 7, Upper Cape 4

The Wildcats even their record to .500 after beating Upper Cape.

Shawn Lavoie collected his second win of the season on the hill for Westport (7-7), picking five shutout innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.

Cameron Leary went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, walk, and stolen base. Connor James added a two-run single and Nick Arruda finished with a hit, two runs scored RBI single and a stolen base.

The Wildcats host Avon on Tuesday.

Seekonk 6, Case 2

The Cardinals dropped their game with league opponent Seekonk to fall to 9-6 (5-5 in SCC). Jacob Poitras collected a pair of hits, including a triple and scored a run. Adam Gracie had a double, walked and scored a run. Aidan Bates finished with a hit, a walk and RBI.

Saturday

Durfee 9, Middleboro 4

The Hilltoppers swept the weekend series with Middleboro on Saturday.

Jacob Cavaco led Durfee (8-6) was three hits, scored three runs and had an RBI. Jeyden Espinal also had three hits, scored a pair of runs and collected two RBI. Josh Martel went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Josh Boria got the victory on the hill after pitching six innings of six-hit ball. Boria had a pair of hits at the plate.

Saturday

Westport 10, Atlantis Charter 1

The Wildcats won their third straight game on Saturday to improve to 6-7

Cameron Leary collected the win on the hill for Westport, allowing a hit, a walk while striking out 12 batters in five innings of work.

Offensively, Noah Sowle went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Nick Arruda had a pair of hits, scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base. Max Gallant finished with a hit, scored a run, stole a base and had three RBI.

SOFTBALL

Somerset Berkley 10, Apponequet 3

The Raiders took care of business against league opponent Apponequet.

Laney Martin picked up the win in the circle for SBR (11-4), allowing just four hits, no earned runs and fanned six batters.

Gabriella Nugent led the way offensively with three hits. Makenzie Jacob chipped in with a pair of hits and an RBI. Mary Jo-Laudati (double), Jordan Theriault (double, RBI), Alexis Ridge (RBI), and Lynnsey Bumpus (RBI) each had a hit.

The Raiders travel to Dartmouth on Wednesday.

Diman 14, West Bridgewater 6

The Bengals had their way with Mayflower Small opponent West Bridgewater.

Emma Medeiros went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI for Diman (12-5; 6-1). She also picked up the win in the circle after fanning five batters.

Patryce Vital had a pair of hits, including a three-run run home run. Skylah Lacroix collected two hits while Alyvia Moniz finished with a hit and three RBI.

The Bengals look to clinch the Mayflower Large title at Southeastern.

Joseph Case 3, Seekonk 0

Defense and pitching was the story in the Cardinals' win over league opponent Seekonk.

Hailey Berube went the distance on the mound for Case (11-4), striking out eight and giving up just five hits. Emera Marcello lead the offense by going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.

Lily Picard made some key plays at shortstop, keeping Seekonk scoreless.

New Bedford 6, Durfee 4

The Hilltoppers lost to league opponent New Bedford.

Westport 5, Bristol Plymouth 3

The Wildcats defeated Mayflower Large opponent Bristol-Plymouth.

Mackenzy Ponte was the winning pitcher for Westport (4-9). She struck out five batters and gave up four hits. Jayda Pequita contributed a pair of hits and two RBI. Layla Bossie finished with a double and two RBI. Third baseman Peyton Mahjoory and Pequita were standouts on defense.

Arlington Catholic 9, Bishop Stang 8

The Spartans dropped a heartbreaker to Arlington Catholic to fall to 3-12.

Cianna Sylvia had three hits, scored two runs, and collected two RBI. Emma Gomes had two hits and drove in four runs. Sydney Alboum finished with two hits and scored three times.

The Spartans host Bishop Fenwick on Wednesday.

BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK

Diman

The Bengals placed fourth out of 12 teams during Monday's State Vocational Championships at Blue Hills.

Jacob Monte was a medalist in three events for Diman (8-1), winning 400 hurdles (1.02.6) and placing third in both 110 hurdles (16.4) and the javelin (121')

Jacob Chouinard placed third in the 400 hurdles (1:03.3) and the triple jump (40'10"). Nathan Nascimiento placed fourth overall in the 100 dash (11.8) while Ezra Cote finished in fifth in the 400 (56.3.

The Bengals will compete at the Mayflower League championships on May 23.

GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK

Diman

The Bengals competed at the State Vocational Championship Meet at Blue Hills and took third overall in the meet.

Scoring and medaling for Diman (7-1-1) were Inez Medeiros took first place (200; 27.39), (second 100; 13.25), and (second 4x400; 3:37). Emma Foley placed third in 100 hurdles (18.20), second in the long jump (16’ 0”), and second (4x400; 3:37). Emily Gonzalez placed second in 400 hurdles (1:16.5), and second in 4x400 (3:37). Sarai Benitez took fourth in the 400 (1:06.3) and second 4x400 (3:37).Julia Latour-Brum (javelin), Eden McCausland (800; 4x800), Grace Flattery (high jump; 4x800), Mya Richardson and Raeleigh Levesque third place 4x800 (13:32), Samantha Santos (400 hurdles) and Katie Miranda (discus) each fared well.
