Monday's HS sports highlights: Records fall at the Tuscarawas County Classic

It was a night when plenty of county track and field records fell as the Tuscarawas County Classic was contested at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium in New Philadelphia Monday.

Dover's Joey Farthing established three meet marks to lead the boys.

The defending Division I state champion in the high jump won that event with a height of 6 feet, 8 inches, That broke the old mark of 6-6 shared by Tusky Valley's Zach Brinkman (2013) and New Philadelphia's Brent Bouscher (1994).

Farthing also won the 100 in 10.98 seconds and claimed the long jump with a record leap of 22-7.

Indian Valley's David Adams broke a long-standing record in the boys pole vault with a 16-4.50 showing as he topped the old mark set by Newcomerstown's Jamie Lewis (1995) by one-half inch. It was also a school record.

Tuscarawas Central Catholic's Jackson Triplett won the boys 1,600 in a record time of 4:16.10.

New Philadelphia's Trevor Bean won the boys 400 in 49.91 and was on two winning Quaker relays.

New Philadelphia's Chance Rennicker claimed the boys 200 in 22.63 and teammate Kayden Scheolles won the boys 800 with a 2:01.41, while Quaker Owen Brady captured the boys 3,200 in 9:39.22.

Dover's Jordan Heaton won the boys 110 hurdles in 15.33 and teammate Ryan McVicker claimed the boys shot put in 51-11, while Garaway's Ty Winters won the boys 300 hurdles with a 41.09 and Claymont's Kurt Haney was the boys discus winner with a 146-1.

New Philadelphia's Rennicker, Stashawn Deetz, Willy Wallace and Evan McInturf won the boys 4x100 relay in 44.72, the Quaker boys 4x200 relay of Bean, Deetz, McInturf and Rennicker were winners in 1:32.35 and the boys 4x400 relay of Schoelles, Brady, McInturf and Bean were champs in 3:31.99.

Garaway's boys 4x800 foursome of Bobby Palmer, Parker Graf, Brendan Chapman and Quinten Schwartz won in 8:47.75.

Hannah Wyler of Tusky Valley sets a record in the 800 meters; Dover's Ava Zobel ties 400 standard

Tusky Valley's Hannah Wyler won the girls 800 with a record time of 2:16.09.

Dover's Ava Zobel tied a record in the 400 as she clocked in with a 1:00.34, equaling the mark of Claymont's Hailey Hunter set in 2003. Zobel also won the 200 with a 26.85.

Crimson Tornado teammate Alyssa Feller was a double-winner in the 100 and 300 hurdles with times of 16.04 and 48.14, respectively,

New Philadelphia's Cambri Mushrush won the 1,600 with a 5:33.82 and 3.200 at 12:10.56.

Dover's Emilyn Feller won the 100 with a 13.32 and teammate Reis Johnson claimed the pole vault with a 10-6.

New Philadelphia's Kaitlin McConnell claimed the high jump with a 5-0 showing and Strasburg's Riley Thomas won the long jump with a 15-11 effort, while Garaway's Makayla Sitzlar won the shot put with a 35-09.50 and Claymont's Arianna Terakedis was a winner in the discus at 113-03.

Dover's 4x100 relay of Caycee Albaugh, Emilyn Feller, Sophia Bielski and Pria Metcalf won in 52.71 and the foursome of Metcalf, Emilyn Feller, Bielski and Zobel won the 4x200 relay with a 1:49.72.

The Tusky Valley 4x400 relay of Ella McElwee, Leah Bourquin, Cara Pipitone and Wyter won in 4:11.97 and the Indian Valley foursome of Rylee Raymond, Alisha Shaw, Brooklyn Myers and Micayela Plants won the 4x800 relay with a 10:35.84.

Softball

Strasburg 10, Conotton Valley 0

Amelia Spidell tossed a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and Emma Gilkerson smacked a home run and double, scored three times and drove in four runs as Strasburg blanked visiting Conotton Valley in a battle of top-five Division IV teams at Franklin Park.

The Tigers (15-3) came into the contest as the No. 2 ranked team and the Rockets were No. 4.

Spidell added a single and double, Hayley Reiger had two doubles and a single and JaeLynn Marks posted three singles for the Tigers.

CV's Masy Baker had six strikeouts.

The teams will meet in a rematch at Conotton Valley on Wednesday,

New Phila 4, Warren Local 0

Julia Miller allowed just one hit and struck out 14 as New Philadelphia won its last East Central Ohio League contest with a shutout at Warren Local.

The Red and Black will join the Ohio Cardinal Conference next season.

Leading the Quakers at the plate were Ellie Mason with a double and a single and Madison Wright with two singles.

New Philadelphia ended its final season in the ECOL with a 6-0 mark.

Dover 19, West Holmes 2

Addie Martin drove in five runs with a home run and two singles, Hannah Locke added three RBIs and winning pitcher Taylor Luneborg had three hits as Dover rolled past West Holmes in a five-inning non-league contest.

Zoe Muhleman, Ellie Durant, Lainey Kohler, Gabi Maraccini and Karis Adkins each added two hits for the Crimson Tornadoes.

Kenzie Woods had two hits and two runs scored for West Holmes. Addison Yoder had a single and double and Avery Yoder posted an RBI single.

Indian Valley 5, Hiland 0

Aubrie McPeek picked up the pitching win and Gabby Meade smacked two home runs as host Indian Valley blanked Hiland in an five-inning contest.

Corra Love added a home run and single, while Brooklyn Sanders added two doubles and two singles.

Tusky Valley 9, Ridgewood 2

Kylie Rohr was 4-for-4 and also got the win in the circle as she struck out 10 in Tusky Valley's IVC South win over Ridgewood at Zoarville.

Elly Rothenstein was 3-for-3 with a home run and a double and Krystal Spillman added two singles.

Central Catholic 20, East Canton 4

Tuscarawas Central Catholic improved its record to 7-9 with a rout over IVC North foe East Canton.

Junior Maddie Ferrell was in the circle, limiting East Canton to four runs on five hits, striking out seven.

At the plate Ferrell remained red hot, hitting two doubles and two singles.

Two Saints batters hit home runs as junior Jordyn Caldwell hit her sixth home run of the season and senior Emily Garbrandt hit the first of her career.

Garbrandt (three RBIs) and Caldwell (one RBI) each added two singles to their hit tally.

Contributing one hit each were Jersi Hickman (single, RBI), Megan Peltz (single, sacrifice fly, three RBIs), Delaney Savage (single, three RBIs) and Lydia Ernest (single).

Garaway 13, Claymont 2

Garaway defeated host Claymont to pick up its10th straight win to improve to 13-5 on the season and 7-2 in the IVC South.

With the Pirates down 2-0 going into the top of the sixth inning, the bats came alive to produce seven runs and six more in the seventh. They ended the game with 17 hits.

Isabelle Tetreault pitched a complete game, allowing two runs and eight hits while striking out six.

Lily Specht had four singles with an RBI and Jordyn Keim added two singles and a home run, her sixth, with three RBIs. Meghan Petitte also had two singles, a home run, her seventh, and four RBIs.

Amia Proper added two hits and Grace Yoder posted a single and double, while Faith Windle drove in two runs for the Pirates.

Sandy Valley 1-8, Malvern 9-6

Neighboring Sandy Valley and Malvern split a doubleheader as Malvern won 9-1 in the opener and Sandy Valley posted an 8-6 second game win in IVC crossover play.

In the Malvern win, Audrey Sikorsky had a home run, single and three RBIs, Madison Hole added a single and double and Bailey Swearingen chipped in two RBIs to back winning pitcher Karissa Ball.

In the Sandy Valley win, Peyton Nicholson had a single and double, Amber Ward and River Eick each had two singles and Carsyn Dine dove in three runs to back winning pitcher Makenna Burk. Madison Hole had a single and double for Malvern.

Newcomerstown 13, Buckeye Trail 3

Megan Parry went 4-for-4 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBIs as host Newcomerstown rolled to an IVC crossover win over Buckeye Trail.

Sheridan 10, River View 0

Brooke Dixon threw her first career shutout as Sheridan shut out River View in Muskingum Valley League play.

Cora Hall homered and singled, Montana O’Brien & Payton Powell each had two hits and Cate Conrad & Avery Mueller each added a double for the Generals (15-5. 10-2 MVL).

Triway 17, Fairless 3

Visiting Triway rolled to a Principals Athletic Conference win at Fairless.

Morgan 23, Coshocton 0

Morgan picked up a lopsided Muskingum Valley League win at Coshocton.

Baseball

Indian Valley 7, Hiland 5

Indian Valley built a seven-run lead in the second inning and then held off Hiland's charge for an IVC South win in a battle of state-ranked teams.

The Braves came into the contest ranked No. 6 in Division III and the Hawks were No. 6 in Division IV.

Kale Kochman led Indian Valley, allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out five in a complete game.

Will Schlabach took the loss for Hiland, surrendering seven runs on two hits over 1⅔ innings, striking out one.

Trevor Myers led Indian Valley (16-3, 9-0) with two hits in two at-bats. Grant Miller, Nolan Yoder, and Cody Yoder each managed multiple hits for Hiland.

Hiland blanked Indian Valley 4-0 in JV action,

Alex Yoder got the win for the Hawks. He struck out 13 and gave up the Braves' only hit in the top of the sixth to Kyle Anderson. Spencer Haney pitched well. He gave up only one earned run and struck out seven.

Dover 5, Steubenville 0

Nolan Kellicker pitched a six-hit shutout and Mason Stoldt drove in three runs as Dover blanked Steubenville for a non-conference win at Dover City Park.

Stoldt had a home run and two singles while Tyler Little hit a home run and single and Ayden Hall had a single and double for the Crimson Tornadoes (14-2), who turned three double plays.

Steubenville dropped to 9-7.

In JV ball, Steubenville beat Dover 11-3. Josh Haverfield had a single and double for the Crimson Tornadoes.

Warren Local 6, New Phila 4

Winning pitcher Caleb Davis had a double and drove in two runs as host Warren Local recorded an ECOL win over New Philadelphia.

Gaven Blake had two hits and Brenton Billman and Maddox Brown each added a hit and RBI for the Quakers (10-5).

Central Catholic 3, East Canton 1

Jacob Rennicker scattered nine hits and didn't allow an earned run as Tuscarawas Central Catholic recorded an IVC North win at East Canton.

Gavin Douglass had an RBI single and Lucas Dummermuth and Chase Harper also had singles, while Marcus Steve and Kyler Fotheringham posted RBIs for the Saints (2-13, 1-6).

Jeremiah Kandel, Steven Stewart, Chanie Stubblefield each had two singles for East Canton.

Tusky Valley 8, Ridgewood 6

The game was tied at six in the bottom of the fifth when Brayden Bauer singled, driving in a run, to give Tusky Valley the lead for good in an IVC South win over Ridgewood.

The Trojans (8-6, 5-2) had 13 hits. Bauer, Cole Clements, David Nussbaumer, and Austin Kohler each managed multiple hits for Tusky Valley.

The Generals (8-7) had seven hits, led by Trent Warden, who went 3-for-4. Gabe Tingle had a big hit driving in two runs. Three other players picked up hits for Ridgewood.

Kohler picked up his third win on the season, giving up six runs on five hits with six strikeouts through five innings. Roman Farnsworth earned his first career save for the Trojans, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.

Garaway 23, Claymont 3

Gabe Amicone smacked a grand slam and a double as he drove in seven runs to lead Garaway to an IVC South win over host Claymont.

Brady Roden went the distance for the Pirates (11-4, 4-4). Roden struck out 10 and helped himself with a double, single and two RBIs.

Cameron Coblentz had three hits with two singles and a double, driving in three. Alexander Roden doubled and singled to drive in a pair. Preston Miller had three hits and three RBIs.

Jack Langdon, Jagger Morrison, Keaton Host, Brody Rauch, and Sky Bower each had singles for Claymont.

Strasburg 7, Conotton Valley 5

Mason Wagner battled through 4⅔ innings to earn the win and Alex Burkett was scoreless for 2⅓ to pick up the save as host Strasburg topped Conotton Valley in an IVC North battle at Franklin Park.

Derek Rissler had three singles, Cooper Dailey chipped in two and Mason Wagner added a double for the Tigers.

For Conotton Valley, Brett Putnam was 4-for-4 and Gaige Gallagher had a double.

Fairless 13, Chippewa 3

On Senior night, Fairless' Cameron Perez had a big game with a single and three RBIs in a Principals Athletic Conference win over Chippewa.

It was the 100th coaching win for Josh Witting as his Falcons improved to 5-10.

Ethan Lautzenheiser went the distance, picking up his third win on the season as he had seven strikeouts in five innings. He also added two hits and an RBI as did Austin Keck. Trevor Horrisberger had an RBI triple and Justin Burkett added a single.

Sandy Valley 5, Malvern 0

Brody Marks scattered three hits and fanned five, and Chandler Humphrey had two hits and an RBI as visiting Sandy Valley (8-9) claimed an IVC crossover win over Malvern (9-9).

Carrollton 11, Alliance 1

Jaxson Rinkes, Brody Wade, Isaac Moore, Cayden Smith and Landon James each drove in two runs to lead Carrollton to an Eastern Buckeye Conference win over Alliance.

Moore led Carrollton with three hits, while Rinkes, Smith and James each added two hits.

Hayden Jenkins was the winning pitcher.

Wheeling Park 6, Harrison Central 2

Visiting Wheeling Park knocked off Harrison Central at Mazeroski Field in Cadiz.

Sheridan 6, River View 5

Sheridan improved to 15-3 after walking off River View for a Muskingum Valley League victory.

Coshocton 5, Morgan 0

Hudson Wesney scattered four hits and struck out 12 as Coshocton shut out Morgan in Muskingum Valley League play.

Travin Berry had two hits, while Kobe Rust and Zach Jennings each had a hit, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Boys tennis

Orrville 4, Claymont 1

Orrville picked up a non-league win over Claymont.

Maddux Maple had the lone win for Claymont at No. 2 singles with 6-4, 6-2 victory over Matthew Anderson.

Canton Central Christian 4, Hiland 2

Canton Central Catholic handed Hiland only its second loss of the season.

Ashland 3, West Holmes 2

West Holmes dropped to 13-3 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference after a setback to West Holmes.

Gaining wins for West Holmes were Hunter Ellis over Cooper Glazier 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Brody Schaad over Reid Wash 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The Ashland JV team won 2-1.
