Monica Garcia left AZ's Family TV news. Now she's the main anchor at this Tucson station

Monica Garcia has a new gig.

She started her job as main anchor for News 4 (KVOA) in Tucson on Monday — where she worked years ago. Garcia left her job as weekend morning anchor at Arizona’s Family and a reporter for “Good Morning Arizona” in June.

“I left here as the morning reporter,” Garcia said Monday, just before walking into the studio at News 4. “Six years later I'm back as the main anchor. Could I have foreseen this coming? Yes. I love Arizona.”

Garcia went to work for Highnoon marketing in Tempe, but when the job at News 4 came up she jumped at the chance.

'Tucson is one of those cities that people choose to come back to'

“News 4 Tucson was my first official on-air morning reporter job, and I learned a ton while I was here. This is really where I fell in love with Arizona, because I moved here from San Diego.”

One of the draws of the job is the city itself, Garcia said.

“It’s so good,” she said. “It’s so familiar. Tucson is one of those cities that people choose to come back to. It was a no-brainer.”

Toward that end, Garcia has moved to Tucson for the job.

“It’s like a homecoming,” she said. “It feels really comfortable.”

Garcia will anchor the main newscasts at News 4 in Tucson

The other attraction was a more consistent schedule, she said, so that viewers know when they can see her.

“I’m looking for an opportunity, as I always say, to be heavily invested in the community,” she said.

As she prepared for her first newscast at News 4, she wasn’t nervous — not exactly, Garcia said.

“I’m confident,” she said. “I’m not scared to be on the air. But I hope as much as I love the community, I hope it loves me back.”
