As monkeypox continues to spread across the U.S., the number of children infected with the virus is growing as well. At least six children have tested positive for monkeypox since July, including a child in Maine and two each in Indiana and California. Children under the age of 8 are among those whom the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers at "increased risk" for developing more severe illness if infected with monkeypox, along with pregnant people, people who are immunocompromised and those who have a history of atopic dermatitis or eczema.
Most who contract the virus experience no symptoms, aiding its stealthy spread.

Polio, a deadly disease that used to paralyze tens of thousands of children every year, is spreading in London, New York and Jerusalem for the first time in decades, spurring catch-up vaccination campaigns. Affecting mainly children under five, it is often asymptomatic but can also cause symptoms including fever and vomiting. There is no cure, but since a vaccine was found in the 1950s, polio is entirely preventable.
COVID is an equal-opportunity menace, at best, and killer, at worst, that has yet to settle into a pattern of seasonality—and may never do so fully. Is it on its way?

British drug regulators have become the first in the world to authorize an updated version of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine that aims to protect against the original virus and the omicron variant. In a statement on Monday, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said it had given the green light to Moderna's combination “bivalent” vaccine, which will be used as an adult booster shot. Each dose of the booster shot will target both the original COVID-19 virus that was first detected in 2020 and the omicron BA.1 variant that was first picked up in November.
