Monkeypox case in Rockland; tree cutting on PIP: Angle

The first case of monkeypox in Rockland County was announced last week.

While U.S. and New York cases of the rare virus are still low, cases are growing. In a two-week period - between June 16 and June 30 - monkeypox cases in the state increased from 21 to 86, or by 309%.

Most reported monkeypox cases are in New York City. As of Friday, Rockland still had just one documented case.

"The Rockland County Department of Health is closely monitoring this case, which is limited to just one individual. There is no identified risk to any county residents," Rockland County Health Department Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel-Ruppert. "As we have shown with COVID-19, staff at our local department of health remain vigilant and ready to respond to communicable diseases of all types, and promptly inform our residents to safeguard their health."
