Monkeypox outbreak can be stopped: WHO official

STORY: "We do at this moment still believe that this outbreak of monkeypox can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups, but time is going by, and we all need to pull together to make that happen," Lewis, WHO told reporters.

The outbreak represents a global health emergency, the WHO's highest level of alert, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Saturday (July 23).

Lewis said although the outbreak remains concentrated on groups of men who have sex with men in some countries, this is not the case in many others, adding that it is important to prevent stigma and discrimination.

The WHO is still discussing the implementation of a global mechanism for monkeypox vaccine sharing, Lewis said.
