SEA BRIGHT−Authorities have released the name of the 64-year-old Highlands man who was found unconscious in the surf in the unguarded North Beach section of the borough Wednesday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has been identified as Henry C. Potter.

Sea Bright Police Chief Brett M. Friedman said it's currently unknown whether Potter drowned or died of some medical problem.

Police were notified shortly before 4 p.m. that a passerby found Potter unresponsive in the surf.

Sea Bright Fire & Rescue joined officers at the scene and CPR was attempted but the man was pronounced dead shortly before 6 p.m., Friedman said.

Friedman said he was likely in the water for some time.

“Nobody saw him go down,” he said.

Sea Bright, known for its members-only beach clubs, sees few drownings.

The last one occurred in 2015, Friedman said.
