Monmouth County man killed in Route 35 crash in Sayreville

SAYREVILLE – A 24-year-old Monmouth County man was killed early Saturday when the car he was a passenger in veered off Route 35, struck a safety bollard for a fire hydrant and overturned, authorities said.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone identified the victim Monday as Keansburg resident Zion Jackson.

Police responded around 5 a.m. Oct. 28 to Route 35 southbound near Fred's Bait & Tackle and found a 2009 Acura TL that had rolled over onto two parked vehicles, Ciccone said.

Jackson, a rear passenger in the Acura, was pronounced dead at the scene, the prosecutor said.

The driver and other passengers in the Acura were taken to an area hospital where they were being treated for serious injuries, Ciccone said.

There were no occupants in the parked vehicles at the time of the crash, the prosecutor said.

An initial investigation found the Acura was traveling south on Route 35 before it crashed, Ciccone said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sayreville Officer Thomas Calise at 732-727-4444 or Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective James Alleva at 732-745-4011.
