Monmouth-Roseville edges Galesburg soccer team 2-1 Thursday
MONMOUTH — The Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer team posted their 10th — and most impressive — victory of the season Thursday afternoon, topping the Galesburg Silver Streaks 2-1 at Pattee Fields.
The outcome was still in doubt to the final whistle, as Galesburg standout Matthew Roach brought the Streaks within a goal with 4:40 left in the game, flicking in a first-touch volley off a cross from Jacob Coon.
M-R built a 2-0 lead using the same formula for both goals — a pass from Rafa Francisco leading to an Ozzie Carmona goal. In the game’s 26th minute, Francisco looped a ball into the box to Carmona, who made one good move and blasted a shot past GHS goalie Caleb Johnson.
With just under 26 minutes to play in the second half, Carmona converted Francisco’s pass with a left-footed shot that bounced off the Galesburg defense but trickled into the goal before the Streaks could stop it, putting M-R ahead 2-0.
The evenly played game saw Galesburg hold a 13-7 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corners.
M-R will take a 10-5-3 record into its final two games of the regular season. The Titans host Roanoke-Benson on Monday and Orion on Tuesday.
Galesburg won the JV game 2-0.
