Monroe boroughs keep 2 mayors, elect new ones in East Stroudsburg and Mount Pocono

All four boroughs in Monroe County held mayoral elections on Tuesday. Here's how the contests played out.

Stroudsburg

Stroudsburg showed strong approval for Mayor Tarah Probst, re-electing the Democrat with 720 votes (69%) compared to 317 (31%) for Republican challenger Kerri Manning-Freeo.

The "Friends of Tarah Probst" Facebook page thanked voters on Wednesday night once mail-in totals were posted by the county, adding "I love being your Mayor!"

Manning-Freeo thanked her supporters on Facebook, and expressed concern that turnout was not higher. "It really shows how people have lost interest in our voting system, or they personally do not care what happens in their community," she wrote.

Delaware Water Gap

The borough along the Delaware River pitted incumbent Republican Larry Freshcorn against Democratic challenger Aubrey Levy.

The mayor retained his seat by a dozen votes, winning 115 (53%) to 103 (47%).

"I'm humbled and I want to say thank you to those that have supported me once again for another term as Mayor of Delaware Water Gap. I will continue to provide the safety and security our little Borough deserves, to the best of my ability," Freshcorn wrote on Facebook.

Mount Pocono

Mount Pocono was the only borough to reject an incumbent, choosing Republican Randy Altemose to replace Mayor Michael Penn, a Democrat.

Altemose won with 295 votes (61%) to Penn's 187 (39%).

"Mayor elect Randy Altemose and Council members elect Donald Struckle and Lori Noonan are looking forward to working with future Council members Ella Santiago and Ann Marie Harris," read a post on the "Save Mount Pocono" Facebook page.

All four council members mentioned in the post are new; Altemose, Donald Struckle and Noonan ran as a united front along with Norman Delano for council and Karen Struckle for tax collector. Karen Struckle won her race, while Delano was a few votes shy of making council. The group is a mix of Republican, independent and unaffiliated candidates.

Penn wrote on Facebook that he had congratulated Altemose on his victory.

"Even if election results don’t turn out as we hope, we hold our heads high because we know we’ve represented the people with dedication, dignity, and honor. If we’re dedicated to working for the people, we step it up and continue our work for the people, one way or another," Penn posted.

East Stroudsburg

East Stroudsburg was guaranteed a new mayor, as incumbent Armand Martinelli was not running for another term.

The borough selected Victor A. Brozusky, a Democrat, with 591 votes (55%).

Lisa VanWhy, a Republican and current vice president of the East Stroudsburg school board, received 319 votes (29%). Libertarian Joel Getz III had a respectable third-party showing with 173 votes (16%).

"Thank you to the residents of the borough who entrusted me with this duty. I will do my best to not let you down," Brozusky's campaign Facebook page posted.
