Monroe County Community College awards scholarships

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College has awarded several scholarships.

• The $1,850 John and Violet Mueller Scholarship was awarded to Zoe Messer and Erika Troyer.

Messer, of Newport, is a 2019 graduate of Jefferson High School. She is studying nursing. She is an active volunteer with Helping Hands clothing and food bank at Community Lutheran Church. She is the daughter of Art and Chari Messer.

Troyer, of Carleton, is a 2012 Jefferson High School graduate. She is studying nursing and is a member of the Student Nurses Association. She is the mother of Madison Troyer and Wyatt James, the spouse of Codie James and the daughter of Christopher Troyer and Barbara Troyer.

• The $1,500 President Emeritus Dr. Ronald Campbell and Blondelle Campbell Scholarship was awarded to Jaden Smith.

Smith, of Ottawa Lake, is a 2021 graduate of Whiteford High School. He is studying graphic design – digital media. At WHS, he was involved in the school’s robotics team, which he continues to mentor. He is the son of Jamie Smith and Janelle Smith.

• The $1,550 Chad E. Nyitray Scholarship was awarded to Evan Schmitz of Ida, a 2023 graduate of Ida High School. He is studying business management and plans to transfer to the University of Toledo. At IHS, he was active in the Ida Soccer Club. He is the son of Kevin Schmitz and Carol Schmitz.

• The $1,700 Kirwen and Karau Scholarship was awarded to Ella Farmer of Petersburg, a 2022 graduate of Ida High School. She is pursuing an Associate of Science degree at MCCC, with plans to become a medical examiner. She is a member of the Criminal Justice Club at MCCC and the Ida Key Club community service organization. She is the daughter of Stephen Farmer and Melissa Farmer.

• The $1,700 Richard H. Hicks and Bernice Hicks Nursing Education Scholarships was awarded to Emma McLaughlin, Emily Smith, Grace Horn and Deborah White.

Horn, of LaSalle, is a 2021 graduate of Ida High School. She is studying nursing and is a president of the Student Nurses Association. She has been an elementary school basketball coach. At IHS, she was a Bluestreak Buddy and member of the Yearbook Committee. She is active in her church and was the recipient of awards recognizing her academic and athletic achievements. She is the fiancé of Kyle Strzesinski and the daughter of Kirt and Kristen Horn.

McLaughlin, of Newport, is a 2020 graduate of Jefferson High School. She is studying nursing at MCCC and also attends Eastern Michigan University. She is involved in the MCCC Student Nurses Association and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She volunteers at St. Luke Clinic in Detroit. While at JHS, she was a member of Student Council and National Honor Society, volunteered with Special Olympics and her church. She is the daughter of Michael McLaughlin and Bridget McLaughlin.

Smith, of Petersburg, is a 2020 graduate of Blissfield High School. She is studying nursing and is a member of the Student Nurses Association. While at BHS, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Physics Club, Debate Team and 4-H. She is the daughter of Joel Smith and Lynette Smith.

White, of Westland, is a 1980 graduate of Plymouth Salem High School in Plymouth. She is studying nursing at MCCC after a career as an administrative assistant in education. She is a member of the Student Nurses Association and Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She is a member of Moose Lodge 1317 and has volunteers with her church, St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, Gleaners Food Bank, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, PB&J Outreach, Mooseheart Charities and St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen. She is the wife of Glenn White and mother to Nicholas, Ian and Victoria.

• The $1,200 Karen Karau-Collins Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Lily Hatkow of Dundee, a 2021 homeschool graduate. She is pursuing an applied science degree in computer information systems: office professional. She also received an MCCC performing music scholarship and is a member of the Agora Chorale. She has performed with a number of other music organizations throughout Michigan. She is the daughter of Scott and Michelle Hatkow.

• The $2,000 Edward and Henrietta Knabusch Trust Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Rachel Miska and Ashley Shawler.

Miska, of Newport, is a 2023 Monroe County Middle College graduate. She is studying nursing. She is the vice president of the Student Nurses Association and Phi Theta Kappa honor society and is a volunteer with the Luke Clinic for mothers and families. She is the daughter of Stephen and Rhonda Miska.

Shawler, of Newport, is a 2006 graduate of Abecka Academy. She is studying early childhood development. She volunteers to provide meals for a Monroe County facility that serves the needy and is a member of the Advisory Committee Board for the Early Childhood Education Program at MCCC. She is the mother of Hudson and the wife of Benjamin Shawler.

• The $1,900 Midway Products – Lyman E. Hoyt Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Dylan Hurley of Dundee, a 2022 graduate of Dundee High School. He is studying computer science and plans to transfer to the University of Toledo to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He has volunteered with animal rescue efforts and supports the American Red Cross. He is the son of Nicole Hurley and Robert Hurley.

• The $1,850 Bryan W. Smith Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Tristan Stevens of Monroe, a 2021 graduate of Jefferson Schools. He is studying welding. He is the son of Greg and Wendy Stevens.

• The $1,750 Hallie H. Billmire Scholarship was awarded to Elizabeth Dyson of Monroe, a 2021 graduate of Jefferson High School. She is studying nursing and plans to continue her education and eventually work in healthcare as a certified registered nurse anesthetist. She was active in 4-H and played softball at Jefferson High School and Schoolcraft College in Livonia. She coached for Jefferson Middle School. She is the daughter of Gerald Dyson and Kristin Dyson.
